Candidate's Statement

Commissioner Hanns serves District 5 - Palm Coast. Prior to becoming a Commissioner in 1992, George served as a councilman on the Palm Coast Service District Advisory Council for two years. During his tenure he was credited with heading up the construction of the Palm Coast Community Park now known as the Jim Holland Memorial Park. A tax paying Floridian since 1972, George is a retired 20+ year builder whose work has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens. He is also a certified residential/ commercial apprenticeship instructor. Prior to Florida, George lived in Chicago, Illinois where he was born in 1946. With the threat of war and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, George joined the U.S. Army in November 1963 and served overseas as an intelligence sergeant during the Viet Nam era for more than two and one half years. George and his long-time partner and companion, Sophie, have been Flagler County residents for more than 23 years. George is the proud father of Nancy, 39, and George, 35, whom he raised from infants as a single parent. He is also a grandfather of two beautiful girls, Miranda and Lilly. George juggles work as a full-time Commissioner and serving as a member of many community organizations. As a County Commissioner, George served on the Florida Association of Counties from 1992-1999 and was certified in 1993. His duties included serving as the Vice Chairman on the Health and Human Services Committee and the Select Committee on Children and Education. In 1998, George headed up efforts in Tallahassee to place Save Our Seniors Homestead Exemption on a statewide ballot which passed successfully. Thousands of seniors in Flagler County benefit from this $50,000 homestead exemption initiative. Governor Lawton Chiles recognized George\'s efforts with the Florida\'s Finest Award, as well as recognized him for his work on the Healthy Kids program. As a life-time volunteer with thousands of community service hours, he has the energy, dedication, and desire to serve and represent all of the people. George has never let his constituents down and never will.
