Candidate's Statement

Bill Cameron came to the Charlotte County Sheriff\'s office four years ago through an appointment by Governor Jeb Bush to become the interim Sheriff of Charlotte County. Of the many candidates for the appointment, the governor felt that Bill Cameron had the experience and skills necessary to instill integrity and order to the agency, and to restore the community\'s confidence in its Sheriff\'s Office. Bill quickly accomplished these goals. Once taking office, one of the first things Sheriff Cameron did was to begin a dialogue with the Charlotte County Commissioners and the county\'s budget director. As a result, for the first time in many years when the time came to discuss the Sheriff\'s Office\'s budget, there were no newspaper articles referring to \"budget battles.\" For the first time, the Sheriff and the county worked as a team and all of Charlotte County benefited. Sheriff Bill Cameron also published the first true five year strategic plan for the Sheriff\'s Office. He delivered that plan to the County Commissioners and the community. That strategic plan is still being used today as the guiding planning document for the Sheriff\'s Office. On August 13, 2004 Hurricane Charley literally blew through the Sheriff\'s Office, ripping one-third of the roof from the administration building, starting in the corner with Sheriff Cameron\'s office. Sheriff Cameron was among 13 people who weathered the Category Four hurricane in an electrical closet. When the group emerged after the storm passed, Sheriff Cameron found much of Charlotte County completely devastated. Over the following days, weeks and months, Sheriff Cameron led the Sheriff\'s Office through the process of recovery, commanding not only his own officers, but hundreds of other officers from around the state and National Guardsmen that came to help. Bill Cameron helped to guide the Charlotte County community through the worst natural disaster in the County\'s history. In keeping his promise to the governor, Bill Cameron did not run for election to the Office at the end of his appointment. With the encouragement of the community, Sheriff Cameron remained at the Sheriff\'s office to support newly elected Sheriff John Davenport as his Chief Deputy. Chief Bill Cameron is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff\'s Office today. Sheriff John Davenport fully endorses Bill Cameron for Sheriff in 2008, as does Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp. Bill Cameron has the education, the training, and the experience to once again lead the Sheriff\'s Office as he did so well as interim Sheriff for Charlotte County in 2004. Bill Cameron restored our faith in our Sheriff\'s Office. Bill was here for Charlotte County when we needed his leadership and guidance the most. And he is still here working for us every day. Now, Charlotte County, it is our turn to be there for him. The men and women of the Sheriff\'s Office deserve great leadership. They deserve Bill Cameron! Proven, Honest, Leadership!
