Candidate: Thomas Vu

I’m Thomas Vu and I’m running for the Alachua County School Board.

My philosophy is simple: I’m forever a student and always a teacher. These roles define my approach, advocating for high standards, transparency, and a commitment to improving our schools  for every student and teacher in Alachua County.

As a former math teacher and district staff member, I value clear solutions. I’ve seen challenges in our district’s leadership, from excessive administrative costs to overlooked budgeting principles, all at the expense of our students and teachers. Born in Orlando from Vietnamese refugees, I found solace in education amidst a challenging childhood in a broken home. School was more than just a place of learning; it was where I discovered my potential and embraced my identity. My family’s dedication and resilience shaped my values. An alumnus of the University of Florida, I graduated with honors in Finance in 2010, working my way through school at Olive Garden.

As a gay man who has fought for acceptance, I understand the need for policies ensuring safety and support for all students and teachers. This campaign isn’t about empty promises; it’s about judicious use of tax dollars, data-driven decisions, and direct communication.

Decisions about our children and tax dollars need to be logical and transparent. Budgets should add up, progress should be tracked on all levels, and concrete plans are essential, especially when it comes to district actions like rezoning. This campaign is about honesty, shedding light on hard truths, and injecting reality and common sense.
