Sheriff Sadie Darnell is seeking re-election in 2020. Her campaign motto is ‘Proven Leadership’.

She was elected as the first woman elected Sheriff of Alachua County on November 14, 2006. She was re-elected in 2008; 2012 and 2016. She has maintained law enforcement certification through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for over forty years.  She is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Quantico, VA; and the Harvard/Kennedy School of Government Executive program, Cambridge, MA.

During her tenure as Alachua County Sheriff, she has provided transparent, professional and ethical service to residents and visitors of Alachua County. She has provided support, training and equipment to ensure employees are able to do their jobs well and safely.  The men and women of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office have responsibility for over 900 square miles of territory, 24 hours a day/seven days a week. Sheriff Darnell has a proven track record of professionalism, knowledge and involvement in the community.

In addition to statutory responsibilities, Sheriff Darnell manages the Alachua County Department of the Jail under contract with the Board of County Commissioners; and the Combined Communications Center through an inter-local agreement with the Board(s) of County Commissioners and City of Gainesville Commissioners.

In the midst of immense and challenging responsibilities, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) is a professional, ethical, well-trained agency which has a long history of impressive accreditation accomplishments:

Law Enforcement: in February 2018, ACSO achieved a third “Excelsior Agency status award from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (CFA). The Excelsior level of recognition is the highest level of achievement in Florida accreditation a criminal justice agency can receive;

Corrections: in February 2018, the Department of the Jail achieved its second “Excelsior Agency” status from the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission, Inc., (FCAC);

Communications: the Combined Communications Center (CCC) achieved its second “Gold Standard” award status in March 2017 from the Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program (PSCAP) through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).  The Gold Standard Assessment focuses on processes and outcomes through interviews and observations.

Sheriff Darnell has active involvement with the Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) and served as President of the FSA Board of Directors for 2015/2016. She is the chair of the FSA’s first Statewide Cold Case Advisory Commission; serves on the Executive Board of the North Central Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Initiative; is an Advisory Committee member for the University of Florida’s Center for Addiction Research and Education; and was the recipient of the Audrey Lincourt Schiebler Child Advocacy Award, 2017.
