Candidate's Statement

Matt Geiger, born in 1968, has resided in Gainesville since 1971.  During his early childhood Matt’s father, Coach Wayne Geiger, attended the University of Florida and his mom, Frankie Geiger, was employed as a nurse at Shands Hospital.   Matt attended Glen Springs Elementary School, Fort Clarke Middle School, Gainesville High School, and Keystone Heights High School, where he graduated as Salutatorian of the class of 1986. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Florida in 2000.  Matt married Carrie Teston, another native of Gainesville, in 1988, and together they have two children. Carrie has served as an educator in Alachua County for 28 years and is currently Principal of P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School at the University of Florida. 

Matt began his career at the Alachua County Tax Collector’s Office in 1992 under the leadership of Tax Collector Jim Bishop, Jr. Matt had the privilege to work and serve under the late Von Fraser, Tax Collector, from 2000-2012, where he was named Executive Director of Tax Operations. He now serves under the leadership of the Honorable John Power, Alachua County Tax Collector. Matt feels honored to work with an award-winning team known for its visionary leadership and exemplary public service. 

Matt has been designated by the Department of Revenue as a Certified Florida Collector’s Assistant. He is a Certified Public Manager and has served the citizens of Alachua County for 27 years, with 25 years of tax roll experience, and 18 years of managerial experience. In his role as Executive Director of Tax Operations, Matt is responsible for the billing and collection of 103,000 Alachua County Real Estate parcels and 11,600 Tangible Personal Property accounts. He is also responsible for Alachua County’s annual tax roll conversion, through which all $330,000,000 of annual taxes are made available for payment. He has served as Chairman and Co-Chair for the State Tax Coalition, representing 67 Counties in Florida. During tax season, Matt frequently works alongside his staff assisting the public at the front counter. He continually demonstrates unbiased and respectful service, proven leadership, and organizational excellence in the service of Alachua County’s 266,000 citizens.
