I was born and raised here in Marathon. My family moved to the FL Keys 175 years ago, specifically in Marathon for about 75 years. I have managed a successful local business for 15 years. I am a graduate of Island Christian School. My wife, who also grew up here, is a graduate of Marathon High School and we are raising our little girl here.
I watch what is happening to our city and I just shake my head. From obvious corruption within to the overgrowth of our vacation rental industry, and the wasteful spending with no regard to resources.
I have many ideas on how we can turn this around and improve our community. We need leaders on council that will speak up and stand against corruption and inefficiencies, and eliminate them. City council cannot just turn their head. Councilmen should challenge city staff's recommendations, not just rubber stamp and approve everything presented to them.
I think our building department as a whole needs a lot of attention. Contractors have to put up with unrealistic timeframes for permits and unacceptable response times from our city staff on simple questions. And also what appears to be very special treatment given to certain developers/builders who don't obey our laws. The BPAS system needs a complete overhaul.
We need to change our direction before we lose more of our small town feel that makes Marathon so special. I hope to earn your vote for the Marathon City Council election this November.
