Candidate's Statement

I am Andy Dance, and it is the honor of my life to serve the great people of Flagler County.  I humbly ask for your support for re-election to the Flagler Countyu Board of County Commissioners for District 1.

About Andy

Length of residency isn’t a qualification for office, but it does add to an understanding of where the community has been and where it is heading. My family has lived in Flagler County for 52 years. We have watched the county grow from 6,000 residents to over 120,000 residents today. Our family has been active participants in our community, from small business ownership and cattle ranch operations to leadership positions in community organizations, law enforcement and elected positions within government. I use the life experiences forged from contributing to our community for over 50 years to guide my decision making. My goal is to ensure a bright future for Flagler County.

My experience as an elected member of the Board of County Commissioners (3 1/2 years, one year as Chairman), elected member of the Flagler County school board (12 years, two years as Chair), 16 years on the Board of the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler & Volusia and six years as Chairman of the Flagler County Community Traffic Safety Team have been extremely valuable and keep me focused on protecting the health, safety and welfare of our residents.

In my three years as a county commissioner, I have taken advantage of the many educational and leadership training opportunities available to me. I completed Certified County Commissioner training and Advanced County Commissioner (levels 1 and 2) training through the Florida Association of Counties (FAC). I sit on the Health, Safety & Justice policy committee, the Water & Environmental Sustainability policy committee for FAC and I am Vice Chair for the Institute of County Government. Locally, I am a board member for the Volusia/Flagler Transportation Planning Organization and the Northeast Florida Regional Council. I was also invited to attend the Northeast Florida Regional Council Leadership Academy this year.

I uniquely bring to the commission 40 years of experience as a licensed landscape architect and planner. As you know, land use and development issues are the most heated and contentious issues that come before the commission. My experience in reading and interpreting land development codes and comprehensive plans has elevated the discussion and review of these development applications brought to the commission. My understanding of the importance of preserving natural resources also brings that balance of protection and preservation to development reviews.
