Candidate's Statement

HelloFriends and Neighbors,

My name is Carlos Patino and I am running for City Council At-Large Group 5.  I am a friend, a neighbor, a concerned citizen and I have many ideas on how to improve our community. I would like to work with the citizens of Jacksonville to make this a great place for us all to live and work and by running for City Council At-Large Group 5, I know we can make great things happen.

I was born to Samuel and Romana Patino in Colombia, South America and I am the youngest of eight children. My family migrated to the United States in 1968, settling down in New York City where my siblings and I attended the local public schools.

My parents were proud people that loved their children and taught us that family is most important. My father worked as a cook for a company that supplied meals to the airlines and my Mom was an extremely attentive stay-at-home parent rearing eight children while making sure our daily tasks were done and our needs were met. We did not have much growing up, so we had to extend the useful life of our belongings and make do with the little we had. Our family endured ups and downs but because of the values that were instilled in us by my parents, along with continuous prayer, we made it through.

In 1975, my family moved to Aurora, Illinois where I attended high school.  School was challenging for me but understanding the values my parents taught me partnered with my own personal beliefs and self-determination helped me to overcome the difficulties and propel me forward to college. In search of a new scene, I moved to Jacksonville, Florida and within a few years, I graduated from the University of North Florida where I earned my bachelor’s degree in finance with a minor in economics. Shortly after graduating, I was hired by the mining company Florida Rock Industries, now owned by Vulcan Materials. I served as Manager of Transportation for the Southeast Division for 20 years before retiring in October 2021.

Is now time for me to listen to the call to action in my spirit and do what is right for our community by dedicating myself to a higher cause. If we are to make changes, they must start with the community.

Please know we can make real changes by working together. T the ups and downs I have faced throughout my life, understanding what diversity and inclusion means for true economic growth, and the love for my community, is the reason I ask for your support. We can make a better tomorrow for all of us and for future generations to come by working together.

Thank you for believing in a better tomorrow.
