Candidate's Statement

Mike Gay and his wife, Maleana, are Jacksonville Natives and reside with their three children on
the Northside of Jacksonville in District 2.  Mike grew up playing little league baseball and
football for the YMCA. Mike played football for Andrew Jackson High School, earned his Eagle
Scout badge, and graduated with the Class of ’82. He even went on to play football for Georgia
Southwestern.

Mike decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and enrolled in the electrical apprenticeship
program with Northeast Florida Builders Association.  He then obtained his State of Florida Certifications in Electrical Contracting, Underground Utility and Excavation, and General Contractor.

Mike had a dream to combine his love of sports with his trade by lighting stadiums and
ballparks. With a strong work ethic and determination, Mike’s dream became reality, and he
started his business, M. Gay Constructors.

Today, M. Gay Constructors has crews that perform work throughout multiple states in the
Southern United States. Over the last 30 years the business has been able to prosper and grow by carefully budgeting and managing his projects. M. Gay Constructors’ work can be observed all
over the City of Jacksonville, like the TIAA Stadium, Jaguars indoor and outdoor practice fields,
Veterans Memorial Arena, Jumbo Shrimp Stadium, UNF track and soccer stadium, and JU’s ball
fields.  Further South, the Daytona International Speedway, University of Florida baseball
stadium, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football stadium.

Due to the scope Mike’s company, he often deals with the Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Port Authority, Jacksonville Aviation Authority and the Duval County School Board, to name a few.

Mike is a devout Christian whose giving nature and work experience has allowed him to
volunteer and travel with numerous churches overseas. He has helped build churches and schools in Guatemala, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Argentina.  Through Mission of
Mercy, Mike helped fund orphanages and feeding programs in Calcutta India, and Cambodia.
He also has visited and helped fund Christian Works in Thailand, Hanoi, Saigon, Vietnam and
Seoul, Korea. Back home in Jacksonville, he was heavily involved with Inner City Missions.

Mike will bring his knowledge of business, project management, and budgeting to City
Council. Mike seeks to bring an end to the habitual overspending pattern and waste, and
tendency of City Council to place select profit ahead of citizens.  He is very concerned about the
needs of constituents, and through hard work and determination, he believes the focus of City
Council can be changed.
