Candidate: April Griffin

My name is April Griffin and I am running for re-election to the District 1 seat on the Alachua County School Board.  It has been my honor to serve as your district 1 representative on the School Board since 2010.  I have been involved in Alachua County’s schools for over 30 years as a teacher, volunteer and School Board Member. I am currently serving as the Vice Chair of the Alachua County School Board and President of the Florida School Boards’ Association. In 2012 I earned my Certified Board Member distinction by completing 96 hours of training in Boardsmanship, School Finance and School Policy. In 2014, I was honored to receive the Consortium of Florida Education Associations School Board Member of the Year Award.  In 2016 I was selected as the Take Stock Mentor of the Year and this year I was awarded the 2017-2018 Florida Education Music Associations’ School Board Member of the Year Award. I have visited every school at least once each year since being elected, served on numerous community committees and boards and am currently in my 7th year as a Take Stock Mentor. Since being elected in 2010 I have worked on the 1 Mil for Schools campaign to support our teachers and students, brought back the County Wide Summer Drama Camp, and helped start the Community School at Howard Bishop.  I know the education issues facing our schools, students and state and will continue to be an advocate for Public Education, teachers and students.  I will continue to keep the students’ best interest in mind and approve policies and programs to ensure that all of our students can be successful.

My husband Kevin and I have been happily married for 31 years and we have three grown sons that attended Alachua County Public Schools and are now gainfully employed, and contributing to the community.
