Candidate's Statement

Hello,

My name is Chris Guerrieri, and I am running for the District 3 school board position.

A little about my background, I have bachelors' degrees in both psychology and political science from the University of North Florida. I graduated high school from Ed White High, right here in Duval County, and I also taught there for five years. This fall, I will be starting my 20th year as a teacher in DCPS, having spent the last ten of those at Palm Avenue, a center school just for profoundly disabled students.

To some of you, my name might sound familiar as I write extensively on education issues in my blog, Education Matters. I have also written hundreds of letters to the editor and op-eds, that have appeared in the Times Union, Folio, and other state and national papers. I had my first piece published in 2007, and I have been at it nonstop since then.

It's not just writing either. My education activism has seen me speak dozens of times at school board meetings and with other organizations and I even testififed in the landmark education funding case.

This fall will be unlike any other. As the world works its way through the pandemic, it has become clear to so many that teachers are a vital part of our society. And where I believe district 3 has several qualified candidates, I also believe the school board needs a teacher and a fighter to join its ranks, and I am both. I believe I am that candidate.

One last thing, if you are here doing your homework and checking out all of the candidates, that is the way to go. We need an informed electorate. So many people vote for who they might like personally or for a letter next to their name without ever really knowing who they are or what they stand for. With me, that won't be a problem. If you go to my blog, you will find over a decades worth of positions on school choice, funding, discipline, and dozens of other education-related subjects, some of which I will likewise post here in the upcoming days and weeks.

Friends, we have one chance to get this right. Who is elected will represent the district for the next four years. Whether you vote for me, and I hope you do, but even if it is somebody else, it is essential you are informed about the candidate's stance on the issues.

Thank you

Chris Guerrieri
