Evaluating the impact of Hurricane Irma on our workforce is a work in process.  We do know that many have left the Keys.  We must work in every way possible to facilitate building and rebuilding of lost workforce housing.

Our enjoyment of the Keys is largely controlled by a balance between three mutually dependent issues:  tourism, traffic and workforce housing.  Tourism is our major economic driver in the Keys and tourism related services are extremely labor intensive.  Both tourists and workers contribute to traffic congestion.  Future decisions related to location of workforce housing must emphasize the placement of housing near the workplace to avoid the creation of additional traffic issues.  We must also provide better public transportation options.

We must always be alert to the need for balance between tourism, workforce housing and traffice to continue to enjoy the Keys that we love.
