Candidate's Statement

Mexico Beach has been my home for 70 years, and my heartfelt passion for our wonderful city runs deep.  For citizens, visitors, 2nd homeowners and small business owners it is our “special little place on earth.”  Local government should and must walk hand in hand and arm in arm with all to protect and preserve our treasured community. My vote, my voice and my vision will always be to maintain the quality of life we expect and deserve as we work, live and play.

For the many years that Mexico Beach has been a part of my life, I’ve been active in the community.  As a founding member of the Mexico Beach Community Development Council, I served as chairperson for two years.  In addition, I have served on the city council three times for a total of 20 years, including 16 years as mayor.

Hurricane Michael, the historic and devasting event of October 10, 2018, forever changed the landscape of our city. The recovery effort has been daunting. However, the heart and stamina shown by our community is something of which we should all be proud.

While preparing for the future, our government must preserve and manage the present in order to maintain our great way of life.  By working together, Mexico Beach is once again vibrant and healthy, and our spirit is strong. Your vote and support are appreciated. In the last 4½ years, there have been many notable achievements accomplished by our government during my tenure as mayor.

Notable Accomplishments During the Last 4½ Years

  • Successfully managed 100+ million in FEMA disaster recovery funds and state grants for over 25 city projects
  • Incurred NO debt from the administration of the FEMA disaster recovery program and was the only Bay County municipality to do so
  • Stabilized the city’s financial status with professional staff and council oversight
  • Reduced the millage rate for the past 2 years and support continuing to do so
  • Developed concurrency reports to ensure water/sewer capacity for all future growth
  • Implemented plans to address city-wide stormwater drainage issues
  • Reestablished a 2-million-dollar General Fund emergency reserve
  • Initiated and negotiated the Bay County Sheriff’s contract for city- wide police service
  • Established an in-depth review process to ensure comprehensive plan, land development code and floodplain compliance

P.S.  Negotiations continue regarding the construction of our pier, government complex (fire/police/civic center) and east jetty wall.  Staying actively involved in securing FEMA funding for these projects remains one of my top priorities.
