Candidate's Statement

I believe I am uniquely qualified to continue to serve on the Flagler County School Board. I have over 29 years of experience in k-20 education and Executive level nonprofit management for statewide and National organizations. I started teaching 29 years ago in the South Bronx and Washington Heights, NY where I fell in love with my students and became passionate about education and ensuring that ALL students are given equal access to an excellent education. I’ve transitioned from K-12 to teaching aspiring new teachers in the college classrooms of Daytona State College and freshman aviators at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.  I know what it’s like in the trenches.

In addition, I’ve spent over a decade leading non-profit entities that impact the future of our nation's children. I have led statewide and national education programs with cummulative budgets totaling over $20 million dollars and reaching over 35,000 students.  Currently, I am the Executive Director of the Gaetz Aerospace Institute, a Dual Enrollment/Outreach program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. I Oversee programming for over 44 School Districts, 156 secondary schools, 246 teachers impacting over 6,500 students throughout Florida, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Louisiana., and manage a $4.1 million dollar budget that supports providing cutting edge programming, introducing students to today’s advancing technologies such as unmanned systems, commercial space operations, aerospace engineering, aviation and flight. I’ve seen the disconnect between secondary and postsecondary education and believe this knowledge will help Flagler County bridge the gap.

I fully understand the value of career technical programs and the need to connect students to industry.  I support our Flaglership programs and have been a longtime advocate of connecting students to rigorous and relevant, project-based curriculum that exposes students to various career fields. We often discuss the challenges around closing the achievement gap, but it is abundantly clear this gap is a gap in opportunities more than anything else. The Flaglership program has provided our students with a multitude of opportunities.

There is much more to share. I could fill endless pages on what we have worked on and towards over the last 20 years. We have many initiatives that are moving in the right direction. However, I truly believe, working together we can finally begin to realize our districts vision of becoming the Nation’s premiere learning organization but it will require us to be courageous and innovative leaders. Working together we can ensure that ALL students graduate as socially responsible citizens with the skills necessary to reach their maximum potential.

In closing, as a past student of Bunnell Elementary School and Flagler Palm Coast High School; as a public servant who has dedicated herself to improving educational outcomes for students for the last 20 years in Flagler County and an Educational leader who has a fire in her belly to see Flagler County be the best of the best; I humbly ask for your vote on August 18th.
