Candidate's Statement

                                                Re-Elect John Magee

I have enjoyed the journey serving you for the past sixteen years. I have worked extremely hard to control unnecessary spending and to bring value to you the taxpayer. Over the last sixteen years of service, we have experienced tremendous growth in South Walton. Can you imagine living in South Walton without a proper mosquito control program? It would be unbearable. My dedication to you the constituent has been a commitment to constantly stay ahead of the growth ensuring that our district is well-equipped and trained to protect your quality of life. I have represented our district in a professional manner which has earned us the status of One of the Best Mosquito Control Districts in the State of Florida.

I have initiated many new programs which are now a day-to-day routine designed to serve you better. Listed below are some of the programs:

Initiating a strong larvicide preventive maintenance program which reduces spraying with pesticides. I love it when I have a person tell me they haven’t seen the spray truck in their area for quite a while. My answer is always that means we are doing our job and you don’t have mosquitoes.

Education has been one of my passions from the first time I was elected I felt that public awareness needs to be promoted. At a state meeting that I attended, Lee County Mosquito Control District presented how they had started teaching mosquito awareness in the school system. This year we were scheduled to teach in over eighty-five classrooms in South Walton. This program is enjoyed by teachers and students alike. This is an ongoing success story!

Any time, you need to have a service you can go online or make a telephone call for service. Our response time is generally on the same day. We have a great team of enthusiastic employees that make our program successful.

SWMC commissioners have diligently worked on and are soon to break ground on our new headquarters. Over six years ago I established an intensive savings program so that we will be debt-free on the completion. Due to hurricanes, coronavirus, the groundbreaking has been delayed but is on track to start in twenty twenty-one. (2021)

My second project has been an ongoing project for seven years. SWMCD manages and maintains several miles of mosquito ditches in South Walton. These ditches were designed to help prevent the spread of mosquitoes and diseases when they were originally built back in the 1960s. Water quality became an issue so we initiated a program of water testing each ditch regularly (all this is documented) and we know exactly what is in the water and what’s not in the water. We are the first organization in Walton County to initiate this kind of program. We had residents ask if SWMC could monitor all South Walton ditches and take over management of them. After extensive research and engineering studies, it was determined that it would be to the benefit of the residents of South Walton if the SWMCD took over the management of all ditches in South Walton. This sounds easier said than done because it requires a tremendous amount of approvals from the State of Florida to the Board of County Commissioners to you the constituents. We have initiated this program and it is currently sitting in Tallahassee on the desk of Representative Brad Drake since January 2020. Once Representative Drake presents the program to the house and if it passes it will then be presented to the Senate. If it passes the Senate, the bill will be brought back to the county and put on a ballot for voting by you the constituents. This is a long-drawn-out process yet it has been rewarding for our team to build the program and learn more about managing ditches and water quality. Remember you the consumer has the final say! This has been a two and a half year project just to get it to Tallahassee, and until it is presented to the house it will sit on Representative Drake’s desk.

Leadership

President/CEO Hi-Tec Laboratories, Inc., Freeport FL.

My wife Patricia and I started this company in 1993 with a small amount of our savings. Hi-Tec Laboratories was a specialty chemical manufacturing company. Together we

have built this company into a multi-million-dollar international business. Our primary customers are Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, and Ace Hardware, True Value Hardware, Publix, Winn Dixie, and many other retail stores.

We successfully sold this company and are enjoying our new journey of retirement and public service to our community.

Brief History

Patricia and I have been married for forty-seven years. We moved to South Walton in 1982 to raise our family. We are the proud parents of two sons, we have been blessed to have four wonderful grandchildren.

I am proud to have served my country as an Army Combat Engineer/ Air Assault during the Vietnam Conflict, also trained in Chemical Biological Warfare. (This background gives me a strong understanding of the mission of SWMC)

SWMC's goal is to provide you with a safe and healthy environment. I believe in a preventive maintenance program to avert the outbreak of mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit. Our last resort should be in using chemicals.

The SWMC must work in harmony with Walton County. We are a state agency but I would like to say we are a community agency; we are the first responder after hurricanes and disasters to ensure that mosquito-borne viruses do not develop. I have worked on a protocol whereas if we had a breakout such as a Zika, Dengue Fever, Equine Encephalitis, and others. Our team is trained on how to notify the public. Our constant monitoring and testing areas keep us ahead of the curve.

In today’s world, the position of Mosquito Control Commissioner is not just to go to a meeting once a month. It is the role of an individual who is willing to serve the needs of the community and employees and stay engaged in the changes in the industry? I am proud to say that I have fulfilled that obligation and then more.

I am the only qualified candidate for this position, proven leadership, proven strong management, and proven true concern for the needs of our employees and taxpayers.
