Douglas (Doug) Aukerman grew up in a small farming community in Central Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1976. In 1980 he transitioned to Active Duty as an Aviation Support Equipment Mechanic. While in the USMC, Doug was assigned to instructor duty at Marine Aviation Training Group Naval Air Station Millington, Tennessee, where he was classified as a Master Training Specialist. Later, he was assigned to Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida as the Senior Marine Instructor at the Aviation Support Equipment “C” School.
Upon retirement from the Marine Corps, Doug went to work for the Walmart Corporation as an Auto Care Center manager in Live Oak, FL. After becoming a Certified Instructor for NJROTC and earning his Associate’s Degree, he became the NJROTC Instructor at Suwannee High School in January 2002, where he taught for 18 ½ years. While in that position, Doug was named Suwannee High School Teacher of the Year in both 2007 and 2012 and was the Grand Marshal of the 2013 Live Oak Christmas Parade. Before retiring from SHS in December 2020, he also served as their Security Officer.
Doug and his wife Kathy have five children, 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. They have called Live Oak their home for over 22 years and are dedicated to their community and its children.
