Candidate's Statement

Judge James V. Pierce was appointed by former Governor Bush on February 17th, 2006 and elected without opposition in 2008 and 2014 as a Pinellas County Judge in the 6th Judicial Circuit. Judge Pierce's legal experiences include twenty-two years of criminal and civil trial practice as an Assistant Public Defender and Corporate Litigation Counsel for State Farm Insurance Company. He currently presides in the Unified Family Court Division as an Acting Circuit Court Judge and hears cases involving juvenile delinquency, child abuse, terminating parental rights, marriage dissolution, child custody, guardianships and adoptions. He has presided over jury trials in the misdemeanor and felony trial court divisions.  In 2013, Judge Pierce was honored by both St. Petersburg and Clearwater Bar Associations for his "extraordinary service on the bench and continuing commitment to improving the quality of justice in the 6th Judicial Circuit." Judge Pierce serves as a role model and mentor within the legal and public communities.  In 2015, he established Boys Court (a collaborative mentoring program for male juvenile offenders) to complement a well-established Girls Court in the 6th Judicial Circuit. In 2016, Judge Pierce was honored with the Beacon Of Light Award by Fresh Start Innovative Mentorship.  He maintains active involvement in the community by speaking to committed youth at the Charles Britt Academy Juvenile Justice Program; students at local elementary, middle and high schools; veteran hospitals, and churches. Judge Pierce is an Adjunct Professor at St. Petersburg College and presides over trials for Stetson University College of Law Trial Advocacy Courses. In 2017, Judge Pierce was invited, and served as a faculty member at the College of Advance Judicial Studies where he and other faculty members discussed establishing specialty courts and therapeutic justice.   He received a Juris Doctorate Degree from Stetson University College of Law in 1983 and a Bachelor Arts Degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Political Science from Bethune – Cookman-University in 1980. A member of the Florida Bar since 1983, he has been vice-chair and committee chairperson for the Florida Bar’s Criminal Procedure Rules Committee and member of the Criminal Law Executive Council. Other current and former memberships includes: Clearwater Bar Association; Fred G. Minnis Bar Association; Barney Masterson Inns of Court; Pinellas County Defense Lawyers Association and the Florida Defense Lawyers Association. Judge Pierce’s community activities have included being a deacon and holding other positions at Mount Carmel Baptist Church; President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Clearwater; board director and incorporator for Alpha Institute, Inc., and Youth Development Initiative, Inc., non-profit organizations that provide mentoring and guidance to middle and highs school students; and Safety Harbor Rotary Club. In 2017, he published a booked entitled “From Fields To Courts,” about his life, education and professional experiences which climaxed with his appointment to the judiciary.
