Candidate's Statement

I grew up in the Pennsylvania steel town of Monessen. My father died when i was five years old.  My mother worked as a waitress to support us when there were no government benefits.  She told me at an early age that she could not afford to pay for college.  So, I applied myself to my studies and gratuated salutatorian of my high school class, ranking 2 of 277 students.  I attended Pittsburgh and Duquesne Universities on scholarships, loans, and part-time work.  After graduating with a degree in math and physics, I began a lifelong career in the federal government. I also worked in private industry on federal government contracts.  My career includes:

  • National Security Agency (NSA) decoded messages intercepted from two of America's greatest adversaries.  Held a special top secret clearance as a cryptomathematician.
  • National Aerounatics and Space Adinistration (NASA) worked in Earth and Planetary Sciences Department on Mars mission.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under current Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as Information Technology Manager.  Investigated employment discrimination cases, worked with district attorney on litigation-worthy cases.
  • General Accountability Office (GAO) liaison to Congress on legislation, budget, and audits.

While employed in Washington, DC area, I was involved in community services activities such as Big & Little Sisters, nursing home assistance, and battered women program.  I taught Bible study to middle school children and adults.

My husband, Dr. Paul Ulrich, and I moved to The Villages in 2007.  We soon took up pickleball and golf and engaged in numerous community activities.  I am a lifelong conservative.  i hold dear the values of freedom, family, the Constitution, capitalism, limited government, lower taxes, balanced budget, strong law enforcement, and religion.  I support the Second Amendment and have participated in International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches.  I possess a Concealed Weapons Permit.  The bulk of my volunteer activities are in local, state, and national politics to promote conservative values.  I am an officer and Board member in Republican local and Florida state Federated Women.

I am grateful for the talents and abilities God gave me.  I wish to return His favors and serve all Sumter County residents. Let's work together to keep Sumter the best governed and prosperous of Florida's 67 counties.  I represent ALL Sumter County residents, not just The Villages. I want to work with you to ensure your Sumter County Florida life is prosperous and secure.

Sumter County Commissioner District 1,

Roberta Ulrich
