Candidate's Statement

Re-Elect Doug Gilpin for County Commissioner

“The people of Sumter County deserve a no-nonsense, straight ahead conservative to fight for them.

I am a plain spoken former Marine and a Ronald Reagan conservative. I believe in the Constitution of the United States.  I hold conservative values and act accordingly.

As a conservative and Constitutionalist, I don’t believe government is the solution to every problem.   I don’t believe that spending more taxpayer money is the answer to all questions.  I believe that the role of government begins with protecting our rights as free citizens.

As a former Marine I am plain spoken - action over words.  If you’re looking for a lot of sweet talk and political doublespeak, I’m not your guy.  We’ve seen what happens in our County when we place our trust in Commissioners who don’t speak the truth.

My record is clear – I’ve consistently voted for less government, lower taxes, stronger law enforcement and restrained spending.  Since I joined the Commission, property taxes have come down and service levels have gone up.

Despite the misinformation you may see on social media, Sumter County citizens enjoy the lowest taxes in the tri county region.  I’ve personally voted 11 times to lower taxes! That’s a record you can count on along with my commitment to bring them down even further.

You might note that I am the only full-time working person on the Commission.  I’m proud to stand up for the workers of our County and their families.

Unlike my political opponent, I live in the district which I am running to serve.  Diane and I love our home in Rutland and the opportunities we have to be involved in our community.  Whether it’s local schools, youth sports, 4-H or the Sumter Youth Center – we are committed to the community and County that we serve...and the district where we live.

I stand with law enforcement.  Law and order is frequently under attack in today’s society – not on my watch!  As Commissioner, I’ve been a champion for our Sheriff’s Department and I’m proud that we enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the State.  My job is to make sure they have the tools and other support they need to keep you safe.

Sumter County deserves honest leaders not afraid to tell the truth and make the hard decisions.  Sadly, right here in Sumter County, we have recently seen what happens when we elect leaders who have their own agendas and don’t speak the truth.  Never again, should we be misled by organizations and social media sites who would sell us on such unqualified, dishonest candidates with personal agendas not in the best interest of our County.

Doug Gilpin has never been a part of any political “team”.  I am an independent thinker who answers to no one but you the taxpayer.  I don’t seek the endorsements of organizations that have their own axes to grind nor do I look to some social media website to champion me.  My commitment is to be what I have always been – an independent voice representing the whole County and doing what is best for all our citizens.
