Candidate's Statement

Thank you for taking the time to read my bio and learn a little bit about me. I grew up in Broward County, FL back when it was very rural and much like Sumter County was 30-40 years ago. I know this because a very dear friend of mine from high school moved here with her parents; Jim and Peggy Catlett, around 1981 and I often came to visit them on my weekends off. That is when I fell in love with Sumter County as it reminded me of everything that Broward County was in the 60’s and 70’s, yet was no longer. As a kid my playgrounds were cow pastures, orange groves and the Everglades. It was a wonderful place to live and grow up that is forever gone. After high school I enlisted in the US Air Force as a Security Forces Specialist. After my honorable discharge from active duty, I entered the Air Force Reserve and continued serving my country for an additional 12 years, earning the rank of E-6. I then transferred to the Army Reserve as a Criminal Investigative Special Agent and served for another 8 years. In 1978 I began my career in civilian law enforcement with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. I left Broward SO in 1982 and went to work for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, where I served until 2012 retiring as a Captain. During those years I served in a wide variety of positions, from patrol deputy to criminal investigations, K-9 handler to supervisor of many different units. I served as a District Commander/Police Chief in the City of Belle Glade and as a patrol Captain where I was directly responsible for a daily workforce of 200+ on-duty deputies during my 12-hour shift. I’ve written and managed budgets of over 20 million dollars while assigned to our Support Services unit (K-9, marine patrol, aviation, traffic unit, etc.). During my time at PBSO (an agency that went from 800 to over 4000 during my tenure), while working and raising my two children, I obtained both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Public Administration from Barry University and Nova Southeastern University, respectively. After my retirement I was offered the position of Public Safety Director at Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico. As such, I was in charge of the Police Dept., Fire Dept., EMS and mountain Search and Rescue. I returned to Florida in 2018 to care for my elderly mother. Since moving to Sumter County, I have continued my life long mission of serving my community by becoming a Supervisor on my VCDD 12 Board, Vice President of The VHA Far South region, President of The Villages Republican Club and a volunteer Big Brother for a young man in Webster.  I now want to serve you, not just the residents of District 2, the seat for which I am running, but ALL residents of Sumter County. Like most of us, I have a substantial financial investment in my home. For my entire adult life I have been held to a higher standard of excellence. I will make certain that our communities keep their high standards so that our property values continue to grow and that our communities maintain their beauty and appeal. Whether you’re on a paved or dirt road, septic tank or public sewer system. I don’t care if your annual taxes are $500 or $5,000; everyone deserves the best representation from our elected servants. I will be the person that represents you, the people; and delivers that localized and personalized service. As a retiree living on a fixed income, I know what it’s like to have to spend my money wisely. As a steward of the public trust and a fiduciary of your tax dollars, I will ensure that all of our money gets spent for only necessary purposes.
