David’s Experience

David has deep knowledge of health care delivery and insurance developed through his extensive experience with multiple companies across many markets.   He has been a director and advisor of large, complex multi-billion-dollar health care companies. He is an innovator and entrepreneur with a track record of accomplishment both within and outside the health care sector, with both not for profit and for profit ventures. He knows health policy and has been an effective advocate for his companies.

Here are just the highlights of his profile:

  • He served as CEO of Lifetime Healthcare Companies whose largest subsidiary was the $6 billion not-for-profit Excellus BlueCross BlueShield plan, which covered nearly 2 million members and directly delivered medical care to 140,000 residents in upstate New York. Excellus was the top-rated, market share leader because of the way it worked with doctors and hospitals to assure both affordability and ready access to high quality medical care.
  • He was a national leader serving as a director of the industry association, America’s Health Insurance Plans, and the national BlueCross BlueShield Association.
  • He remains nationally networked and is a sought-after director and advisor. He is Director of Commonwealth Care Alliance (Boston), a not-for-profit health care delivery and insurance company that serves high need, high cost patients covered by both Medicare and Medicaid. Additionally, he is Director of Landmark Health (Huntington Beach, California), Avalon Healthcare Solutions (Tampa), NextHealth Technologies (Denver), Transparent Health Marketplace (Philadelphia), Cogito Corporation (Boston) and CTG (Buffalo).
  • He is Director and Immediate Past Chair of the New York E-Health Collaborative, the New York State not-for-profit, publicly funded health information exchange, which manages inter-operability of electronic medical records for over 40 million patients.
  • He serves as a special advisor to the CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
  • He is a venture and private equity fund advisor for Health Catalyst Capital in New York City, Cressey & Company in Chicago and Triple Tree Capital Partners in Minneapolis.
  • He is a professor of Public Health Sciences, School of Medicine and executive professor of Health Care Management, Simon Business School at the University of Rochester and has served on the Johns Hopkins University’s Carey School of Business Health Care Advisory Board.

David’s Plans as a Lee Health Director

Enhancing quality and service while managing expense is what health care business leaders like David Klein do. David has a proven track record of assisting large health care organizations to enhance their performance and success. He plans to help Lee Health management to:  

  • Manage the ongoing impact of COVID-19 to assure both strong health care and financial performance 
  • Pursue the vision of creating a Southwest Florida health system deeply involved in providing excellent care for our community 
  • Become the health care system of choice for doctors, nurses and other caregivers 
  • Assure care is uniformly high quality and delivered efficiently at all sites of care 
  • Expand mental health and substance abuse services 

David is Community-Minded, and commits himself wholeheartedly to his community

  • He served as a national leader in the not-for-profit health care sector, including as chair of the BlueCross BlueShield Not-for-Profit Leadership Council and a member of the Alliance for Not-for-Profit Health Care
  • To honor David’s dedication to appropriate end-of-life care, upon his retirement, his company created the David H. Klein Center for Compassion and Healing
