Candidate's Statement

Kimberly Musselman has worked in the court system for 30 years as an investigator, probation officer, judicial law clerk, and prosecutor. Kimberly is ready to serve as a county court judge. She is an experienced trial attorney and has a sound knowledge of the law. She will be fair to all parties, apply the appropriate laws, and make well-reasoned decisions. Kimberly has a calm demeanor, common sense, and she understands how to balance what is fair against the needs of society, the community, and victims of crimes.

Kimberly was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in the suburbs of Maryland. In 1988, Kimberly moved to Brevard County to attend Florida Institute of Technology. During her senior year, Kimberly interned at the Brevard County Jail with the Pretrial Release Program and a year later, Kimberly was hired as a Brevard County Probation Officer. She served in this role for seven years where she supervised probationers, taught monthly interpersonal skills and anger management classes, and trained new probation officers.

In 1999, Kimberly attended Widener School of Law in Harrisburg, PA. She was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society and competed in the First Amendment Moot Court Competition at Vanderbilt University. Kimberly helped to establish the Criminal Law Society and served as president and secretary. In 2001, she served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Richard A. Lewis of the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas in Harrisburg, PA. During her three years as a law clerk, she attended many court proceedings, drafted orders, and trial court opinions in felony criminal matters, civil actions, and family cases.

In 2004, Kimberly returned to Brevard County to work as an Assistant State Attorney at the State Attorney’s Office. Kimberly has tried many misdemeanor and felony cases. She served as the training attorney for five plus years and trained over 35 attorneys and certified legal interns. Four of the attorneys that Kimberly trained are now judges in Brevard County and one is a judge in North Carolina. Kimberly currently works in felony intake where she reviews cases submitted by law enforcement officers for a filing decision. She has reviewed over 1000 arrest and/or search warrants, before they are submitted to a judge for review. In recent years, Kimberly had worked on many homicide cases and has participated in grand jury presentations for the past three years.

Kimberly has been an active volunteer in our community. She served as a county court mediator, adult literacy tutor, and was the chapter advisor of her sorority for 15 years. She is a past board member of AMIKids Space Coast and the Sexual Assault Victim Services Board of the 18th Judicial Circuit. Kimberly was a member of the Junior League of South Brevard, held numerous leadership positions, and served as President in 2012-2013.

In 2011, she adopted two children from the foster care system, who are now teenagers. The family enjoys the beach, amusement parks, and traveling around Florida to see the wonderful things the State has to offer.
