Candidate: Jared Michael Greenberg

Hello my fellow neighbors. I, Jared Michael Greenberg, am running for the City of Port St. Lucie District 3 City council seat in the special election Tuesday, September 21, 2021, and then for the normal election on June 13, 2022, (means you need to vote for me twice). I wanted to reach out to you for your support.  What can Jared do for you?

I am a Florida native and grew up in Jupiter, born and raised in Jupiter Farms since 1978.  I attended Jerry Thomas Community Elementary school, then Watson B. Duncan Community Middle school, then William T. Dwyer Community High School. You name it I did it growing up, Webelos scouts (over 150 arrows earned), Cub scouts , 4-H, Boy Scouts (Order of arrow and Eagle scout), Navy Sea Cadets, Future Business Leaders of America-President, Florida Path-Finders nominee, Swim Team Captain, Volleyball, Track and Field.  I am a University of Florida Graduate in Mechanical Engineering with a Masters Engineering Certificate from the University of Maryland.  I moved to our wonderful city in 2008 because of the C-23 Canal and wonderful neighbors that I met while house shopping. I am an active board member at New Hope Fellowship Church in Palm City.  I am a proud father of two wonderful children.  I am also an Upward Sports soccer coach at New Hope Fellowship, soon to have a Basketball program if you want to come out and join in on the fun.  I am also an Eagle Scout which I got when I lived in Gan, France for a year while in High School at the age of 15.  I have adopted a street in my neighborhood to teach the younger generation how to keep our planet clean.  I think it is important to keep the city looking its best with helping in removing trash, consider becoming an active member of the Adopt a Street group. I am a proud graduate of the City University Class, class #4 in 2017.   As you can tell I have always served my community by my actions and tasks that I have accomplished. Some of the changes I would like to see:

1. First I want to lower the 5.9 Tax millage rate of our Taxes.  We can do this by my ideas that I have outlined below.  If you allow more businesses to generate revenue and income for the city then you can lower the cost to the residents to pay for those needed services.  The more residents you have moving to the city the more businesses are needed to serve those residents. For example, by adding the C-23 and C-24 canal to ocean access that will allow business to cater to those western parts of the city, Saint Lucie  and Martin county. Because that promotes needs driven by the increased economic traffic by having people using a FREE local resource that is not currently being used that could generate tax revenue.  For example the 65,000 new homes built in Tradition, let's say 10,000 of those new home owners would like to have a boat and a place to use the boat that is not 30 miles from a usable water way.  Well if you can use the C-23 Canal then you can get restaurants, marines, boating stores, boat mechanics, trailer shops etc.... All from those increased 10,000 registered boat owners that are at the Western part of the city https://youtu.be/AGZhCV43OpM.

2. Allow a 100 Mega Watt Renewable Power Generating / Recycling Center / Manufacturing facility. This would be similar to the Fort Lauderdale (182,595 population) Wheelabrator South Broward waste-to-energy facility that is a 66 Mega Watt, but just more modern to allow more items to be recycled after being processed.  Or the new one that came on line in 2015 the Palm Beach county the SWA's Renewable Energy Facility 2, Facilities • Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, FL • CivicEngage (swa.org).  This would allow more revenue to the city, by my simple calculations each year it would generate $102,584,808.00 or more in profits, see slide two of presentation below. That means the city can lower taxes by $102,584,808.00 once it gets build and paid for. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a mixture of energy-rich materials such as paper, plastics, yard waste, and products made from wood. For every 100 pounds of MSW in the United States, about 85 pounds can be burned as fuel to generate electricity. Waste-to-energy plants reduce 2,000 pounds of garbage to ash weighing about 300 pounds to 600 pounds, and they reduce the volume of waste by about 87%.  The Sweden designed plants reduce the waste to 1% that goes to the land fill.  That is amazing.  This would allow St Lucie County, City of Port St. Lucie, Indian River County, Okeechobee and Martin County with a population of 886,636 (Pre-CoVid) to reduce their land fill usage and help the environment while making a lot of revenue that we can use for our schools and to be used to lower our millage rate.  Modern MSW plants have almost zero emissions due to modern technologies thanks to all other countries that currently do this (Japan, Scandinavia, Switzerland, United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Korea, Czech Republic, Hungary. I would want to build the ones they use over in Sweden as they have 1% that goes to the landfill.

3. We seem to have a shortage of skilled employees.  My approach to this problem is full circle.  We need to have more babies, that's right.  Make making babies Great again. :-) You cannot hire people if you do not have them to hire.  And to help making childcare more affordable I think we should encourage every nursing home to have a daycare attached to it.  Almost every Nursing home that I have been to has the room to attach a 100 ft by 100 ft building to it. And every article that I have read about it says it's great for both the residents and the kids. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/what-happens-when-you-combine-day-care-and-nursing-home.  Then you have to keep our school at the best, with what the local community wants to be taught to our kids. Not what Washington says needs to be taught.  The Washington DC schools are a disaster. We must have trade schools back in our high schools.  This will allow for a strong local workforce.

4. A boat ramp park made on the C-23 similar to the C-24 Boat Ramp Park.  I think a good spot would be the West side of I-95 and Becker since it is currently not developed.  This would allow a large inland area to have ocean access, imagine a community 25 miles from the ocean having boating access to it. Let's bring the "Port" back to Port St. Lucie. Remove the unrequired berm behind the homes from SW South Quick Circle to the Turnpike on the C-23 canal, about 2 miles worth of dirt.  This US Army Corp of Engineers dirt would be used for item No. 10 below. 5. To help get more Parks without requiring more land. Lets build what I call Pond Parks, we have a lot of drainage ponds along Becker road and it would be easy to build a large covered gazebo so the public could use the water area.  The local residents would decide what it looks like and where it would be placed.  The public could reserve it for a nominal fee like $15/4hr for birthday parties, graduation celebrations etc... Water is very relaxing and we should enjoy the resources that we have in our backyards. I liked the feedback of some of the residents that would like to put walking paths along the top bank which would be a great idea as that would help with getting America in shape. 6. Allow the residents that own property on the same street to be able to place a detached garage on it without having to get a unity of title, like 801 SW Haas Ave.  If you own property you should be able to be allowed to build what you want without having to place a 3 bedroom 2 bath house on it first.  Our lots are very small. And the city should allow the residents to have their personal property parked on their own property, like parking for their toys, like boat trailers, etc...  I am only talking about personnel equipment not commercial equipment like Semi-trailers etc... You should also be allowed to place a fence around that property as well. We just need to change a few of the city code zone rules to allow this to happen.  For example Indian River Drive has property that is split by a public road.

7. Try to have roundabouts placed where possible.  They work very well and require no lights and maintenance for years to come, which helps reduce our maintenance budget and keeps our taxes as low as possible.  Like the one at the East end of Becker Road just past Publix.  I moved to the Becker road area because of the Becker road concept, which was to have 3 major roundabouts at the major intersections (Port St Lucie BLVD, Savona and SW Darwin Blvd).  I would like to see the new Port Saint Lucie Blvd expansion have roundabouts, especially at Tulip.  We have to look at what the next 20 years are going to need so we do not have a Saint Lucie West BLVD here before we know it.

8. I was the one that got the trees planted on both sides of Citrus Bridge and got the 6 lots around the bridge back under the city’s ownership.  I also got the trash and recycling cans placed at the bridge so the public can place their trash when they enjoy the bridge.  I was not the one that requested the green park bench at the bottom of the bridge. But I do like the new bench to our community, it's a new conversation piece. (Please watch my YouTube video https://youtu.be/vFK3NaUfj-M)

9. Keep the push to get more parks.  I would like to have a variety of parks that people can use.  I really like how the Woodland trails park keeps improving.  The overhead sun shade is great so the public can use the park in the heat of the day.

10. I would like the residents that live along SW Abacus Ave and SW Abbot Ave that have the City's drainage canal removed so they can have access to the C-23 Canal without having the City’s canal behind their houses. I would think two 10 inch PVC Schedule 80 pipes would work fine for doing a drainage equalizations system that the canal currently does.  A local assessment would be applied and those residents would pay till it’s paid off.  Just like our special assessments for the city Sewer and City water were done on our tax bill, there would be no more than $100 or less added to the tax records on each of those 120 parcels. 11. Shed placement, you should be able to place the shed next to your fence, in the corner, you should not be required to place it out of the city's utility easement.  It’s your property and we have very little of it and when the city asks for the shed to be placed so far away from the edge of the property it takes up much more space than needed.

13. I was also the one that got the city to rezone two lots that were zoned as multi-family to single family before the builder was permitted to build their beautiful single family homes on these two lots.  My neighbors and I also got the process of removing the ROI so it cannot have multi-family back into these 22 parcels.  Go power to the people.

14. Jobs: I have noticed we have a large demand for trade schools.  We have a huge need in our community for skilled trades: electrical, HVAC, plumbing.  Since our high schools have stopped Shop class I would like to bring them back.  I graduated from William T. Dwyer Community High School with a Vocational Technology Achievement Award. I loved the hands on.  I would like for interested high school students to graduate High School able to get their Florida trade license and have a few accounting classes so they will be able to run their business if they want to do that.

14a.  I love this article that Simpson Tree service is doing in the county (Planning Commission backs recycler for Orange Avenue | News | hometownnewstc.com).  Is the city requesting this from Waste Pro?  This will help reduce landfill waste and help local businesses.  I would love to go and pick up locally made mulch.

14b. Since I am on the topic of Waste Pro. I think we should do single can Automated trash pick up.  This will allow more trucks to be driven and be easier for Waste Pro to get everyone on trash day.  All the studies that I have read say it saves money while increasing customer satisfaction.  Granted you will have to get a second trash can if you cannot fit it all in.  But the single can trash that is picked up with the arm just like our recycling. (Automated trash collection replacing garbagemen to cut injuries and - sometimes - costs - cleveland.com).  The money saved (I guess it would be $600,000 a year) can go into paying down our debt and towards building more Parks.  Remember our city is about to become the number 7 largest city in the State of Florida.

These are just a few ideas I have and have gotten done since I have been here.  I cannot promise that everything will get done but I like simple solutions for problems.  I look forward to working for you and hope I can count on your vote.
