Candidate's Statement

Build Better, Work Better, Grow Stronger!

Jewel Cannada-Wynn was born in Century, Florida to the late Myrtle Mae and Joshua Andrews. She is the second oldest of six children. She graduated from Century High School, Pensacola State/Junior College with an A.S. in Criminal Justice Technology, the University of Maryland European Branch with a B.S. in Government, and the University of West Florida where she earned her Master’s in Teaching History. She is a 2005 National Board-Certified Teacher and a member of Greater Union Baptist Church.

Currently, Jewel is a dean at Escambia High School. She has been employed with the Escambia County School District for twenty-seven years. She will retire from the school district in the fall of 2021. Her career in public service began as a military member where she served as a Security Forces Specialist. She is retired from the United States Air Force Reserve after 20 years of service. During the 20 years, she served in Operation Desert Storm/Shield.

Jewel was elected to the Pensacola City Council in 2004 as the District 6 Representatives. She served as a council member for six years and in 2008 was chosen by her peers to be  Deputy Mayor for the City of Pensacola. Her tenure as a council member ended in January 2010, however, she continued to volunteer her time and service to the community.

In August 2012, Jewel was re-elected to the Pensacola City Council. She served the citizens of Distric7 for eight years. During her eight years of service, she served as Vice-President of the council and two terms as President of the Council. She also served two terms as Chair of the Community Redevelopment Agency. During her tenure as a council member, she advocated strongly for her community and allocated thousands of dollars to her district. She also facilitated efforts to generate millions of dollars to support infrastructure projects for the city.

Jewel currently serves on the following boards: Winterfest, Community Enterprise Investment, Inc, and the Monument to Women Veterans.

 

Affordable Housing, Public Safety,  Strong Safe Neighborhoods,  Community Policing, and Economic Development are important issues and will drive the campaign.

As a leader in the community, Jewel has played an important role in the tremendous revitalization and economic growth within the City of Pensacola. She looks forward to leading Pensacola in the future.
