Candidate's Statement

Hello, my name is Megan Walters. I want to invite you to assist me in becoming the next commissioner of District 5 on the Escambia Board of County Commissioners. I am a fourth generation, lifelong North Escambia County resident. I love North Escambia County, and believe I can make a difference by improving North Escambia’s quality of life through effective representation.

I have been married for nearly 18 years to my best friend and soul mate Charles “Chuck” Walters. Chuck has been a firefighter for 20 years with the City of Pensacola Fire Department. He is currently a Battalion Chief and fully supports me in my desire to represent North Escambia County.

Chuck and I have four boys, and all four of our boys are a special blessing from God.

In my early 20’s I became a public safety dispatcher. I proudly served as a dispatcher for the Pensacola Fire Department, Baptist LifeFlight, and Escambia County 911. I also served as a volunteer fire firefighter and as an EMT. I left public safety to take care of my boys and manage our home. However, I managed to complete my Associates Degree and volunteered my time for various organizations.

Since 2008 I have volunteered with the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Young Marines, and at Molino Park Elementary School. I was nominated for two terms to serve on the Molino Park Elementary School Advisory Council. I am currently an active volunteer and hold a board position with the Tate Quarterback Club.

In 2015 I was appointed to serve on the Mass Transit Advisory Council and became chair of the council for several years. I have also volunteered with Northwest Florida Guardian Ad Litem and held a board position during my time with the organization. I also started the Barrineau Park Neighborhood Watch and continue to maintain it.

I started a yard sale and consignment business using items I already had. The business grew quickly and when I stepped away, I had bookings just about every weekend and employed 7 part time employees.

My faith in God, my marriage, being a mother to 4 boys, my career path, and the time I’ve volunteered to the various organizations I spoke about has molded and shaped me to be an ideal candidate for District 5. I understand what the obstacles are that people like me face every day. I understand what it’s like working paycheck to paycheck. I understand scrimping and saving to stretch a dollar as far as it can be stretched. I understand the struggles of juggling work and family.

I am not a politician. I don’t have downtown money shoved in my pockets. I don’t have a poker face and what you see is what you get. One of my favorite quotes is, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. North Escambia County is my world and everything I will work toward is to make my community the best it can possibly be.

I understand the frustrations of my neighbors in District 5 with terrible internet service in North Escambia County, waiting on trains at the paper mill, the condition of roads and bridges, that my neighbors in District 5 feel as though they are neglected, forgot about, and end up with the scraps and leftovers from the rest of the county. North Escambia County deserves a commissioner that is accessible and has the best interests of District 5 in mind.

I believe in budget reform. Decade after decade of misappropriated funds and frivolous spending. It’s time to get the budget under control.

I believe in having adequate roads and bridges that are properly funded and properly maintained.

I believe in term limits. No more career politicians.

Public safety should be adequately funded. Our public safety agencies should be properly staffed and have the equipment they need.

Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with concerns you may have.
