Candidate's Statement

Misty  grew up in South Brevard and moved to the Central Florida area in 1989.  She graduated from Rollins College, Summa Cum Laude in 2000 with a B.A. in Organizational Communication.  Misty continued her studies at Rollins College graduating in 2002, Summa Cum Laude with an M.A. in Corporate Communication and Technology.

?In 2003 she chose to move back to Brevard County to raise her family.  She is the mother of two children who attend Brevard Public Schools.  She has been a committed volunteer for her children's school and the school district in many capacities, including leading the PTO to the National PTO of the Year in 2011.

?Her passion for helping children led her to certify as an Infant Swim Resource instructor where she teaches infants and children how to save themselves in the event of an aquatic emergency.   Misty was also an Adjunct Professor at Rollins  College from 2003 to 2015, when she felt the need to devote more time and energy to the school board.  She taught in areas of leadership, listening, communication, and small group development.

?Since being elected to the School Board in 2014, Misty has advocated strongly for the North Brevard community as well as for teachers, and students throughout the district.  She is proud of the collaborative relationship she has built with school administrators, teachers, parents and students.  Her open access policy has given her a wide understanding of the issues most important to each group and strong relationships to work through challenges.  In addition to her statutorily defined duties, Misty served as the School Board Chairperson during the 2016-2017 school year.  Her work as chair focused on establishing board protocols and expectations, establishing a 360-degree evaluation for board members, and focusing on team building between district leadership and the board to increase efficiency.  She serves on the Florida School Board Association Advocacy Committee, The Florida School Board Association Legislative Committee and recently graduated from Leadership Florida Education Class III.

She completed over 90 hours of continuing education through the Florida School Board Association in areas of leadership, governance, school finance, personnel and bargaining issues, advocacy, and general school board knowledge. Misty is the Board Champion for Leading and Learning and supports strategic priorities in Leading and Learning, Student Services, and Equity, Innovation, and Choice.
