Candidate's Statement

Bruce C. Scott is married to his wife of over 20 years Karen R. Scott they have 2 children of their own Giana 11 and Emily 17, along with several part time foster children and 7 grandchildren. Bruce is a local businessman born and raised 5th generation Florida Native. Born in Lee County in 1954 he has grown up with and without the Mosquito control. Bruce knows first hand how the Mosquito control has helped make SW Florida the paradise it is today. The importance of mosquito control is personal in his own life since his father Bruce J. Scott contracted mosquito born malaria as a teen in SW Florida and suffered greatly from it.Because of that experience his father was instrumental in helping to organize and start the mosquito control when he served as a Florida State Representative as well as a Lee County Commissioner.Bruce worked for about four years as a aerial inspector under Mr. Miller and Mr.Opp. This experience helped him see first hand how important and difficult it is for LCMCD and all of the personnel to work together in maintaining the level of protection that Lee County residents have depended on over the 5+ decades that LCMCD has been in operation. And how important it is to try to keep a step or two ahead of the increasing risks associated with mosquito born diseases. I remember the days of low flying planes and diesel fog mixed with malathion, hanging on the the back of the slow moving fogger truck on my bicycle, it\'s a wonder I\'m alive today. However the Mosquito control of today is a far different machine than it was then in many, many, ways. aircraft is still a very very big part of our control method and will always be. No more diesel sprayed on aircraft manifolds to carry the pesticides, no more planes at just above tree top. Less dangerous chemicals both to humans, animals and non targeted species, bio-degradable material, and so on. The most difficult part now is that as our population increases and our world shrinks is foreign diseases and new species of mosquitoes that are introduced in to our area. The Lee County Mosquito control is unlike any other in the country, it presents unique situations that very few other districts have to deal with. The big question for the Future is controlling the cost of and maintaining the level of protection that is needed for the increasing population of SW Florida. LCMCD has always tried to provide the level of protection to her residents at the most efficient and cost effective way possible. This level of protection has been maintained by her leadership and the boots on the ground since its inception. On top of that are the commissioners that have sat on her board, local business men and women who know how to balance a check book and how to get the job done for the least amount of money, yet provide the best service possible. All the men and women on the board are very aware the cost of failing to provide the protection needed for our neighbors. I look forward to serving Lee County For another 4 years keeping our eye on the future, safety and maintaining the beauty that is SW Florida.
