Candidate's Statement

I have been a resident of Charlotte County for 35 years. My wife Nicole and I have four children currently enrolled in the Charlotte County public school system. I was a member of the first graduating class of Port Charlotte High School in 1984 and went on to Florida Southern College and graduated in 1988 with a B.S. in political science. I became a licensed Florida real estate associate in 1987 and a licensed General Contractor in 1992. As an Owner and Vice President of Pik’N Run convenience stores, I planned the development and expansion of sites throughout Charlotte and Lee Counties. I was responsible for land acquisition, bank financing, business financial planning, project cost estimating, budgeting, contract negotiations, engineering analysis, field production, permit submittals and approvals from various Local, State and Federal regulatory agencies. Pik’N Run employs approximately 90 people with our headquarters here in Charlotte County. My experience gives me a keen understanding of the issues facing you, your family, business owners and the County as we recover from an economic recession. I believe my resume will broaden the discussion to move Charlotte County forward. I hope to serve the citizens of Charlotte County so the services you expect can be delivered in the most efficient and effective manner. If elected, the core of my responsibility will be for the health, safety and welfare of our community while being a steward of taxpayer dollars. I intend to place an emphasis on financial review, transparency and responsible growth initiatives. Another cornerstone in my campaign will be to promote a “Pride” initiative. The foundation of any community is citizen pride. I want to continue my work with the landscape committee and support the gateway and thoroughfare improvement plan and clean up our appearance along US41 and throughout the County. These improvements will help promote how we feel about where we live while leveling the playing field with surrounding counties as we look for growth during a national demographic shift to Florida. I want to give our residential and commercial construction industry a chance to flourish as it once did as we maintain our identity and uniqueness as old Florida waterfront living. The construction of one new home creates hundreds of jobs and more importantly new construction broadens the tax base so the County and taxpayers can reach efficiencies of scale. We cannot sustain needed infrastructure improvements with a static population. We need to craft a plan to tap into the growth potential. My understanding of issues will not be limited to an executive summary or Staff report. While those forms of information should be highly valued I will apply my experience, independent research and knowledge to aid in making community based policy decisions. Where some see problems, I see opportunity for solutions. I hope you consider my qualifications to serve as your Charlotte County Commissioner District 5. Together we will move Charlotte County forward.
