Candidate's Statement

My whole career has been right here in Bay County.  As a beginning teacher in 1982, I gained my knowledge and experience from the ground up.  My professional experiences include substitute, classroom teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal.  Over the years I have learned that the most important thing we can do for our children is to provide them with an education that prepares them for their future.  Preparing our students for tomorrow not only helps them, but fulfills the needs our community has for our futures as well.  Working together, all of us, teachers, parents, civic, business and community leaders can provide the best options for our students!

My educational experiences have included Shaw Adult Center, Rosenwald Junior High School, Rutherford High School, Bay High School, and Mosley High School.  My teaching experiences include grades 7 – 12 in both English and Social Studies.  Upon completing my Master's degree in Educational Leadership, I became an Assistant Principal at Bay High School.  As the administrator in charge of guidance, I gained experience in leading groups and committees to structure change and policy.  While at Bay High School, I assisted in creating the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) honors program, block scheduling, and the use of classroom technology among various other initiatives.

During my tenure as principal of A. Crawford  Mosley High School, I led the school improvement efforts to make Mosley the first “A” high school in Bay County.  Along with a dedicated staff, I assisted in creating the Mosley Advanced Placement Program for Success (MAPPS) honors program, and the Freshman Learning through Integrated Programs (FLIP) which focuses on the transition of ninth graders to high school.  I attribute the teachers in these programs with making Mosley one of the most successful high schools in the state.

The biggest challenge in my career has been and continues to be the recovery efforts I am leading our school district in following Hurricane Michael.  Our losses are approaching $700 million and our community has been devastated. The challenges and time to recover will be huge and long lasting. But we have an amazing team and support from many leaders in our state and in our country … and we will build back bigger, stronger, and better!
