Candidate's Statement

I've served as a teacher in Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) for 9 years (August 2006 - September 2015). Prior to teaching, I served 22 years in the United States Navy, and retired from the military at the rank of E-7/CPO. I received my bachelor's degree from Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida, and received my MA degree from Webster University in Management and Leadership. As a DCPS teacher, serving the great children of Jacksonville, Florida, has been an honor for me watching them grow socially and academically. I've taught at Highlands Middle School, 6 years, and JEB Stuart Middle School, 3 years, respectively. During my tenure at J.E.B. Stuart Middle School, I was elected as Teacher of the Year (TOY), 2014 - 2015 school year. I officially retired from DCPS, September 4, 2015, as the Dean of  Students from Englewood High School. I maintain, in good standing, my professional teaching certificate from the State of Florida (DOEFL). My Subject area certificate is Mathematics 5-9 and Integrated Curriculum 5-9. My experience continues as a math coach, math department chair, certified mentor for novice teachers, lead teacher grade level, lead teacher subject learning communities and many more PLC's local and district level. I believe that improved technology in schools is the most effective way in ensuring the safety of all our Students, Staff, and Faculty. I believe that we must support the teacher in maintaning an environment conducive to learning in the classroom, and increase the involvement and collaboration between members of the community, to include: parents, legal guardians, businesses and other stakeholders. My leadership and experience is directly connected to my military career (22 years) and public school teacher (9 years) in Duval County, Florida. If you elect me to serve and represent District 6, I will use my experience and leadership in evaluating and assessing all situations brought before me. My leadership and experience will be key factors in making decisions, that will produce and sustain an environment that is safe and conducive to learning for Duval County Public Schools.
