Candidate's Statement

Commissioner George Hanns Commissioner George Hanns serves District 5, Palm Coast Prior to becoming a Commissioner in 1992,George served as a Councilman on the Palm Coast Serving District Advisory Council for two years and was credited with heading the construction of the Palm Coast Community Park now known as the Jim Holland Memorial Park. George is a retired 25+ year Builder (his work has been featured in Better Homes and gardens) and a Certified Residential/Commercial Carpentry Instructor. Apprenticeship Instructor. Instructor credits include Electrical and Carpentry Training as well as teaching apprentices over a 20 year period. George has been a Florida tax payer since 1972. With the threat of war and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, George joined the US Army in November 1963 and served over 2 1/2 years overseas as an Intelligence Sergeant during the Vietnam War era. While serving in the US Army, George graduated from the NonCommissioned Officers Academy for Leaders Preparation Training, received an expert rating in tactics, communications and electronic surveillance equipment as well as attending the Armed Forces Institute. Born in Chicago , Illinois in 1946, George and his long time partner and companion, Sophia have been Flagler County residents for over 25 years. George is a proud Father of two adult children,Nancy and George, who he raised from infants as a single parent. He is also a Grandfather of two beautiful girls, Miranda and Lilly. George works full time as a County Commissioner, including work on numerous Board assignments and membership with many organizations. As a County Commissioner, George Hanns served as Commission Chairman from 2009-2010 and again from 2013-2014. Additionally, the Commission appointed George to serve on the Florida Association of Counties from 1992 to 1999 and he was Certified in 1993. His duties included health and Human Services Committee as Vice Chairman and the Select Committee on Children and Education, where in 1998, while in Tallahassee, George headed up efforts to place Save Our seniors Homestead Exemption on the statewide ballot which was passed by the voters. he received a Florida\'s Finest Award from Governor Lawton Chiles in recognition of significant dedication and devotion to the common good of our state. George also received a personal letter from Governor Chiles in appreciation of his work on the Healthy Kids Program.George was re-certified as a County Commissioner in 2015 and received his Advanced Certification in 2016 Major Projects initiated by George include: Palm Coast Community Park ( Jim Holland Park) Founder of the Flagler County Artificial Reefs Princess Place Preserve Florida Agriculture Museum Save our Seniors Homestead Exemption (passed by a 3 to 1 margin statewide) Worked to extend the Healthy Kids Program to Flagler County residents by obtaining 40% funding from the School Board, 40% funding from Flagler County, and 20 % funding from Florida Hospital-Flagler Supported I-95 overpass and interchange at Matanza Parkway, the paving of Old Kings Road North,Palm Coast Parkway Preservation Supported efforts to transfer infrastructure (buildings , roads equipment) to the new City of Palm Coast upon incorporation in 2000 Espanola Community Center Restored the Old St Johns Park Community Center Multi use complex at the Fairgrounds Flagler Youth Center and Hockey Rink at the Flagler Palm Coast High School Preservation of the Old Moody Homestead Park, located on the Historic Old Brick Road ( Grove of 400 year old Oak trees) Princess Place Covered Bridge and Stable Restoration along with the two Bath Houses Veterans Memorial at Flagler County General Services Building George has served the community in many organizations such as: Knights of Columbus 7845, 4th Degree Sir Knight American Legion Post 115, Past 100% Commander Sons of the American Squadron 115, Past Charter Commander Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696, Past all American Commander American Legion 40/8 Honor Society Italian American War veterans Post 7 St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Past Eucharist Minister and Lecture United Brotherhood of Carpenters Adopt A Road Sponsor Flagler County Friends of the Library Italian American Social Club German American Friendship Club Flagler County Historical Society Flagler County Chamber of Commerce Princess Place Citizens Support Group , Past Chairman Artificial Reef Committee Public Safety Coordinating Council, Past Chairman Education Impact Fee Flagler County Family Preservation Task force, Past Chairman Alcohol Drug Abuse Mental Health Planning Council, Past Chairman Adult Elder Planning Council.Past Vice -Chairman Northeast Florida State Hospital Past Vice Chairman Awards: Multi year Awards Health Dept District 12 for service to our clients Multi year Awards Department of Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation VFW first place National Award Community Service
