Candidate's Statement

Greetings,

I would like to start by introducing myself, I am Jonathan. Many friends call me “J. Green.” My great-grandmother, Blanche Denton was born and raised in Bay Minette Alabama in the early 1900s. She would move to Pensacola when she reached the age of 18, living in the Tanyard. During the Jim Crow South, she was a Black Business Owner, and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Downtown Pensacola.

Blanche had a daughter (and several sons), Gloria Denton was born in 1932, and was raised in St. Joseph's Church & School. Gloria married C.M. Green in 1950. C.M. Green is a retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sergeant who served in Vietnam and Korea, during a segregated and integrated military. He experienced many forms of discrimination throughout his military career. Also, he is a retired Local Business Owner having been an automotive repairman from the early 1970's through 2004.

Gloria was always for the people, and instilled a spirit of achievement in her children and grandchildren, including myself. Gloria dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate, through various church ministries at St. Joseph’s. Additionally, Gloria would actively participate in the Civil Rights Movement Protests during the 1950's & 1960’s in Pensacola. She would tell a story of having my Mother (DeMina “DeeDee”), and Aunts (Vanessa & Clareta “Baba”) in strollers during a particular march. Her eyes saw much of the not-so "upside" of Florida. However, many strides have been made from those times.

DeeDee, now retired, worked for the Department of Defense as a civil servant, and worked hard to support my older sister (Tiffany) and me, as well giving us an educational pathway to achieve. During this pathway of education, I also met my wife, Alexandria. Together, we have one life-loving child, named Langston.

My grandmother, Gloria, instilled the spirit of “Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong,” in her family. Knowing what is right, I want to serve as your Mayor for Pensacola, Florida. I know I am fully able to carry out the duties of this position and bring a new vision with the current progress. I have taken much life preparation to be able to be at a point like this, at this moment in life.

Being 31 years old, I currently serve as an Educator. I teach Social Justice through Reading. Additionally, I am a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator. Prior to returning to Pensacola, after graduating law school in 2016, I attended the Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence. During law school, my passion for social justice and human rights was fueled by the injustices occurring almost daily, in this country, throughout our various communities and neighborhoods.

I applied to law school because my social service career frustrated me by "putting a band-aid on life threatening wounds." I wanted to do more. As I worked in social services (2010-2013), I earned a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the Troy University (2012). My Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice was earned at the University of South Alabama (2009). I graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 2004.

I am an advocate for human rights and civil rights for ALL people. In being such, this involves being clear on how various acts and decisions affect and impact everyone. I believe being able to translate certain views and opinions for the benefit of ALL people, while being firm and knowing how to listen for understanding through the art of patience will benefit our community. Listening allows for better communication, and as Mayor I intend to hear the issues that concern you most, by making meaningful change for clear action and results, while being economically efficient.
