Candidate's Statement

County Commissioner, District 2 Background I was born in Brooklyn, New York grew up in Long Island and have lived in Florida since 1979. I have two daughters and 5 grandchildren. My oldest grandchild is a Petty Officer 3rd class in the United States Navy. My husband Jimmy and I live in a log house that we built in 1980 I have spent most of my adult life as a teacher and retired from PHCC in May of 2005 after 26 years as a professor. I hold a BA degree from State Univ. Of New York, a Master Degree from Hofstra Univ. and a Doctorate in Higher Education from Nova University. I am also a Certified County Commissioner Experience. I was elected to the County Commission in 1994. An environmental issue was the catalyst for my government involvement. Much of my knowledge of county government was learned in the trenches while fighting the polluting effects of a 54 ton medical waste incinerator and chlorine plant planned for an environmentally sensitive area in Gowers Corners. As a commissioner, I have been chair of the commission twice, former chair of the Tourist Development Council, served on the Area for the Aging board and presently chair of the Local Transportation Coordinating Board, member of the Pasco Economic Development Council, and hold membership in the five Chambers of Commerce. Community involvement: I have been on the board of The Lighthouse, United Way and the Pasco Food Bank. My present emphasis has been with the American Cancer Society. I am have been event and sponsorship chair for the AMC \"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer\" in 2003-2005. This year I have been named chair of the AMC State Operating Comm for Making Strides. Because I enjoy working with young people and realize they are our future, I chaired the 2006 nominating committee for the Suncoast Girl Scout council and judged the VFW Voice of Democracy since 1986. Since becoming a commissioner I hold Govt. 101\" days for local school children to help them understand government. Recognized by the Community: 1995 \"Bob Graham Community College Distinguished Service Award 1998 \"Woman of Distinction\" Suncoast Girl Scout Council. For serving as a role model for young women. 1998 \"Leadership in Governmental Affairs Award\" Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce. 1998 \"Outstanding Public Servant\" West Pasco Chamber of Commerce. 1999 \"Citizen of the Year\" Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce. 1999 \"Friends of Extension in Government\" University of Florida 2001 Land of Lakes United Soccer League for leadership and caring. Candidate Statement: As a Pasco County Commissioner, I have used good common sense, governed intelligently, kept my integrity and responded to citizens\' concerns. I am not afraid to stand up for the people of Pasco, to ask tough questions and to find answers. Serving as a voice for Pasco\'s citizens led to my stand on controlling billboards, cellular towers, commercial signs, securing added environmental protection, increasing impact fees, and lowering taxes. One of my proudest moments was working with other commissioners and state officials to secure the Veterans\' Nursing Home for Pasco County. I will continue to work for the residents of Pasco: Increase economic development Hold the line on taxes Manage growth and protect Pasco\'s environment Provide recreational and library services Examine alternative methods to pave roads Increase use of technology to streamline govt. Support development and funding of needed infrastructure. I appreciate your help and ask for your support. If you have questions related to the campaign, you may email me at commpat@aol.com
