Candidate's Statement

After the election and the necessary requirements needed to get the newly formed Village of Estero Council functioning, my three top priorities are: 1. Request from Lee County, the South Water Management District and the Department of Environmental Protection, a current up-to-date study indicating the viability and adequacy of all aquifers and pollutants involved in supplying quality water to Estero now and in the future. The study should also reflect what is being done to protect the aquifers and the Estero River from pollutants. 2. Support the Health Care Village concept and plan with Lee Memorial Hospital. 3. Estero is recognized as the hottest real estate market in the state, because of this, it is extremely critical to continue to involve the public\'s participation and involvement in land and property development. ------------------------------ Kathryn “Katy” Errington has announced her candidacy for the Village of Estero Council, District 4. Katy supports the Estero Community Plan to establish a community that embraces its historic heritage and protects the environment, while carefully planning for future development resulting from a desirable high quality of life, and expanding economic opportunities. The community of Estero has been an integral part of Katy’s life since becoming a resident of the Breckenridge Golf and Tennis community 10-years ago. Katy Errington’s leadership commitments before moving to Florida include: business and marketing teacher/school administrator, adjunct professor and an educational consultant for IBM. She is past president of a suburban Cincinnati Rotary club; Rotary International District Governor, Southwest Ohio (53 Rotary clubs); marketing and public relations director for a humanitarian-aid organization; founder and director of a nonprofit organization for children. She is a Gold Star Mother. During the past five years, Katy volunteered and worked in numerous Estero community service projects. She is a member and board director of the Rotary Club of Estero and in 2011-2012 was named Rotarian of the Year. In addition to being a member of the Estero Historical Society, she chaired a Day of Smiles’ Dental Clinic for Estero children. Supported by12 local dentists and dental hygienists the event was held at the Estero Community Park. She serves on the board of directors for Interfaith Charities of South Lee County (ICSL), a nonprofit organization that provides a food pantry, meals on wheels and various kinds of assistance for South Lee County residents who are facing difficult times in their lives. For ICSL, Katy chairs and implements square foot, organic gardening concepts using waist-high, raised garden beds for growing vegetables and herbs. The pilot-project garden was made possible through a substantial grant awarded to ICSL from a gated community in Estero. The purpose of the grant is to teach ICSL clients how to grow vegetables for better nutrition and to provide the individuals with gardening skills and resources to make vegetable growing possible at their own homes. ICSL works closely with United Way and the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Katy Errington is president of Breckenridge Golf and Tennis Preserve III Condominium Association and is co-chair of the landscaping committee. Through the Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association, Katy acquired the skills and completed the testing to become a Florida Certified Horticultural Professional (FCHP). The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the five water management districts in Florida recognize FCHP certification. Katy Errington’s interests are broad and her focus is wide for the future within the Vision for the Village of Estero. She is especially interested in the quality of budgetary management, strong building zoning and ordinances, protecting the natural resources, especially the properties along the historic Estero River and the Estero Aquatic Bay Preserves. She believes future land uses should be managed by the type, location, quality, design and intensity of its location. She supports Estero’s quality of life through the development of a broad array of community parks, public spaces, and recreational facilities. She recognizes the importance of integrating the Koreshan State Historic site into the fabric of the community by improving the area’s landscaping and enhancing pedestrian and bicycle access. Katy Errington believes that the Village of Estero Council needs to provide greater opportunities for public participation in the land development approval process. She also acknowledges that it is extremely vital that various forms of communication and technology are available to attract and advance Estero’s Community Plan to promote economic development, real estate and tourist destinations, and equally important to use different methods of communication and media to keep the community up-to-date on the news and announcements from the newly chartered Village of Estero Council.
