Candidate's Statement

My name is Howard Fein and I love Saint Lucie County. I appreciate it for what it is but mostly I like St Lucie because it has the potential to be a prosperous and vibrant county for all of its residents. This county is a great place to retire and I want to thank those who have come south out of the cold and settled here. However we must not forget about those of us who need a job while raising families and still working on that American Dream. For many in this county it hasn’t lived up to its potential. Over 40 percent of St Lucie’s work force must travel to other counties to work; sometimes 3 and 4 counties away for well-paying jobs. Why aren’t those jobs here? In my humble opinion, the reason is St Lucie County lacks a self-sustaining economy. This means we are the first to feel economic downturns and the last to benefit from any recovery. As an owner of a few mobile home parks in this county, I see the struggle that many of my residents go through and it is disheartening. But if you would like a clue as to why, simply look at the St. Lucie County Comprehensive Plan at www.stlucieco.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=2004 – look at page 3. You will notice that the County Government has decided that the highest revenue producing Land Use types (commercial, light industrial, industrial) which are also typically the best job producers will be less than ONE PERCENT (1%). This is the land set aside that would normally produce the most revenues so the county could pay their employees and first responders adequately. Now, if the County needs to increase revenues which we all know they do, then they MUST INCREASE YOUR TAXES. Your property taxes must go up unless we change this and we can. We have a marine port not being used, farmland not being farmed, and an airport in the wrong spot. We have here in St Lucie County the fundamental building blocks of a strong self-sufficient county if we just allow these resources to become unleashed. It is not enough for someone in a government position to exclaim, “Let there be jobs”. Government doesn’t create jobs, at least not the jobs we need in this county. Government sets the economic climate and it is this climate that can drive job creation or it can drive jobs away. We need to have people on the county commission that understand business, understand utilization of resources, understand the true meaning of property rights and its value to our American way of life. We need people there who have known the struggle and know how best to succeed because your future while living here depends on it. I have an engineering degree from USF, but nothing beats work experience. I have engaged in computer programing for Price-Waterhouse; worked on construction sites; worked in hospital operating rooms consulting on surgical implants. On my own properties I’ve drawn up blue-prints, I’ve been a carpenter, electrician and roofer. I’ve dug ditches and repaired sewers, I’ve been the garbage man, plumber, arborist, landscaper, and even psychologist if you can count being a compassionate shoulder to lean on. I’ve done a lot, I’ve seen a lot, I know what works and what doesn’t, and why. I’ve risked my own capital and have spent sleepless nights when things looked bad. While my experience might not be unique, it is an experience seemingly not shared by most on the current County Commission. With another point of view as that of many of our hard working constituents, my experience will complement the others currently serving the county. When I heard that after 16 years, Paula Lewis would retire from the County Commission, I thought this would be a good time to offer my services. Following in her footsteps will not be easy, but I hope that she would want someone with a fresh perspective to help her county. Whether I win or lose, I would like to thank Mrs. Lewis for all of her hard work and dedication to this county. I am an avid outdoorsman which is another reason I like St. Lucie County. I feel so lucky to be here and would like to make sure we keep intact all that it offers. As a family man, an advanced open water diver, avid fisherman, country boy at heart who enjoys camping with his family, mudding, sport clay shooting and as a Certified Water Operator you can be assured that I have a keen eye for the environment and want to make sure everyone can enjoy it and has access to it. On a last note I’d like to say I am a big Patriot. I love my Country, I love our military, especially the Veterans and I love our men and women in blue (and green) who protect and serve our great community. I am looking for your help, your support and your vote, and together we can make St Lucie County a county to enjoy with prosperity for all its residents. www.FEIN2016.com God Bless, Howard Fein :)
