Candidate's Statement

John Carvelli was born February 6, 1961 on Plattsburgh Air Force Base in upstate New York. In 1973, he moved with his family to Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County and his family opened the first Italian Deli in Fort Pierce. John attended public schools until high school where he graduated from John Carroll High School in 1979. He later attended and graduated from Clemson University, B.S., 1984, the University of Florida, M.Ed., 1986, and Clemson University, Doctorate, in 1993. John has extensive experience in the field of education, especially Vocational Career and Technical education. During his career, he has served as a Vocational Education Teacher, Elementary and Alternative High School School Principal, Adult Education Apprenticeship Coordinator, and School District Central Office Administrator. From 1994-2010, he was elected to the St. Lucie County School Board, serving seven times as Chairman or Vice-Chairman. During his elected career, he was appointed by three Florida Commissioners of Education to serve on statewide committees and task forces. In 1997, as School Board Chairman, he testified in Federal Court and led countywide collaborative efforts to lift the 27 year school desegregation order. Throughout his School Board Member career, he was involved in two countywide construction bond referendums, an excellent state OPPAGA operations audit, the initial districtwide accreditation of countywide schools, proposing joint meetings with the County Commission, leading efforts to open the FAU/Palm Pointe K-8 Charter Lab School, and developing an accountability monitoring system for the St. Lucie County school district in 2006-07 which tracked progress , leading to 27 \"A\" and \"B\" schools in 2010. John\'s volunter community service began in 1976 when he co-founded the Port St. Lucie Junior Lions (LEO)Club. He has been active with the United Way, Special Olympics, the initial 1997 Sunrise Theater Board of Directors, St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, he helped to co-found a junior golf program at PGA for local elementary and middle students.He also owned and personally managed several small agricultural tracts of land from 1992-2013. John is married to Karol Carvelli, an ESE Specialist at Palm Pointe K-8 and has a daughter who attends John Carroll High School.
