Candidate's Statement

Mission Statement: Prepare for tomorrow Through fiscal solvency today Provide service Guidance through leadership Preserve heritage As each election process comes we find ourselves excited at the prospect of a new fresh crop of individuals to choose from. We watch those to whom we have entrusted by our vote to do the right thing for our community and we the citizenry, many times out of comfort and name recognition, we opt for the same one we know and may just breeze right by a new potential candidate because we don\'t know them or recognize their name. Someone with fresh ideas willing to make difficult decisions. This is my opportunity to introduce myself- Betty Jo Starke- to St. Lucie County if you don\'t know me already. Born in Miami, Florida, I went to Miami Senior High School. As a youth I was a Girl Scout, candy striper, and collected for different causes and participated in service club organizations in school. I was a waitress while in school, worked at Publix and also several years as a dental assistant/ receptionist. The family settled here in 1980\'s to Lakewood Park, and I moved here shortly after. It was hard to find a job at first. I worked at Ocean Village when early bird dinners were $ 5.95. Then while at Mangrove Matties I was fortunate enough to have been offered a job with Huber Distributing which became Wm. Thies and Sons; distributor of Miller products, Heineken and so much more. I was on premise servicing draft beer systems. As time progressed through 15 years I covered 7 counties and was depended upon by 100\'s of accounts. Also assisted with sales and weekend grocery restock, POS, special events and more. This is where a lot of you would recognize me from Legion Posts, VFW\'s, AM VETS, Boozgeois Saloon, restaurants, country clubs, and bars. Downsized with 25 others in 2002 I wanted to put my 4 plus years worth of night school education to work. I went to HBOI and studied Aquaculture and raised clownfish at ORA. It was a great experience. Finally I was able to use my sciences and Entomology at St. Lucie County Mosquito Control and have been there since March 15, 2004. Thankful to be in place as the storms came it was a colossal opportunity to serve the community after the saturation of wind, rain, and devastation. After several years I went to IRSC Blackburn and became a licensed CNA and was my fathers Hospice care taker for his end days. At this point it is time to raise my service to a greater level. That is why I am seeking the office of District 1 Commissioner. Some ideas may be in the works, some may be new. The number one concern is fiscal solvency at every level. Why not start here at home. Let us balance the budget and put the surplus in place. I believe government officials should oversee county finances as they would their own and cut waste. It is very easy to spend other people\'s money. We must shore up our grid and maintain our utility and roads infrastructure upgrades. Entrepreneurship and agriculture- heritage and specialty- should be one of our avenues to job creation. We must find a way to bring small- medium scale cargo operations to our port and provide more jobs. Eliminate the red tape it takes to open and start a business. Attempt to cut crime by personal involvement with religious institutions, law enforcement, character development mentoring. The tax burden should be .5 to 1 cent sales tax to share the burden on small scale as opposed to greater home owner burdens. Housing should be non toxic and safe for renters and owners on all levels of the spectrum from mobile home to mansion. Continue to develop our community while helping veterans, seniors, children, homeless, and those in need. A hand up not a hand out. Community gardens would be an active way for dignity and pride and its own reward. I am a strong proponent of local government rights and state rights. Strengthen intra and inter county as well as water management relationships in order to return our lagoon to pristine. We must rely upon our existing attractiveness and offerings. They will come. Influences- Father Fred taught me strength, Brother Fred taught me wit and financial ways. Brother in law Arthur Wood taught me to care and to be aware of my government. (If you don\'t care who will) IRCC-from 1988 AA Bio-Earth Science with over 4 years worth of Marine, Micro, Chemical, Math. UFL IFAS- Entomology, Organic Bio-Chemistry, Hydro Crop Production and Eco systems of Fl. HBOI- Aquaculture Program IRSC- Blackburn CNA 2013 Licenses: Florida DL FL PHPC FL CNA Causes, Support, and Service- Sarah\'s Kitchen, St Marks Evangelist, Salvation Army, United Way, Humane Society, of St. Lucie County, Historical Society, Sunrise Theatre, Wounded Warriors, USO, Hospice, Breast Cancer Causes and more. Please consider my substantive proposals and vote for my opportunity to serve. Thank You- Betty Jo Starke.
