Candidate's Statement

Scott Hottenstein was born in the Bronx, New York before moving with his family to the West Palm Beach area when he was three years old.  He graduated from The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach in 1988 and attended the Naval Academy, graduating in 1992 with a degree in Political Science.  In his early career, Scott served on three ships and returned to the Naval Academy to teach in the Leadership and Law Department.

Later, he commanded a Naval Reserve Center, and was second-in-command for multiple units such as an Ordnance Battalion, a Customs Battalion of 450 Sailors that deployed to Kuwait, Iraq, and Kyrgyzstan, and Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily, Italy during the most recent Libya conflict.  During his 24 year career in the Navy, Scott gained extensive experience in leadership, teamwork, and managing large budgets with multiple funding streams.  He retired in July 2012 and relocated to Lithia, FL.

After retirement, Scott earned his five-year teaching certificate and began substitute teaching in public and private schools.  In 2013, he was hired full time as a Social Studies teacher at Barrington Middle School.

Scott is now in his 5th year of teaching 7th grade Civics, where his students have done well enough on the annual End of Course Assessment to earn him a “Highly Effective” teacher rating.

He has coached the Barrington girls Lady Bolts track team for five years, never cutting a student who tried out, ensuring that all of the 70-80 athletes run in at least one track meet a year, winning the Cluster Championship from 2014 to 2017, and finishing 2nd overall in the County in 2017.

Scott created and is the faculty advisor for both the Student Government and Chess Club.  Student Government participates in a number of events, such as visits to the local veterans state nursing home, and donates hundreds of dollars each year to charitable causes such as Relay for Life.  Chess Club welcomes members of all ability levels and hosts an annual tournament with Eisenhower Middle School.

He is also the Faculty Member of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), an advisor for National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), on the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Positive Behavior System (PBS) teams and is a part time assistant coach for both boys and girls soccer teams.

Scott’s wife Laura is school counselor at Rodgers Middle School, and his two teenage sons attend local public schools.
