Candidate's Statement

Gregg Ney, 69, is running for Seat One on the St Lucie West Services District Board of Supervisors. His goal is to further improve the quality of life within the community—attractive landscaping, solid infrastructure, secure public safety, and strong property values—while staying within the current budget. During the time Ney previously served on the Board, the District realized a savings of one and a half millions dollars by refinancing a series of municipal bonds. Also during that time, an initiative that Ney had spearheaded through the SLW Presidents Council came to fruition. The Board unanimously voted to take responsibility for storm drainage pipes to maintain, improve, and enhance drainage during heavy rainstorms. These pipes, which run from streets to drainage ponds, had been previously maintained by individual property owner associations. \"This was a big public safety issue. All neighborhoods are interconnected and if one neighborhood fell in disrepair it would cause a domino effect upstream,\" Ney said. “We’re all concerned about street flooding. Now we can be certain that the system is maintained properly, but the best part is, as a result, we’re all saving money. A second part of the initiative from the President’s Council, will be the takeover of the irrigation piping within neighborhoods by the District. Currently, the District maintains only irrigation lines to the edge of the association property. With the new policy, which most likely will be in effect in the upcoming fiscal year, irrigation lines will be maintained to the point of service for an individual property owner. “As we saw with the stormwater takeover, I expect this to represent a major cost savings to the HOAs and Condominiums in our community, and by extension, also to the members of those associations,” Ney predicts. “It’s amazing what we can do when we communicate, cooperate, and collaborate as a community.” Ney has always been committed to building a sense of community, a skill he\'s fostered as president of his local homeowners association. He said if everyone comes together as a community, the District can make more improvements and progress. Born in Ohio, raised in Western Pennsylvania, and a resident of Evanston, Illinois for over forty years, Ney retired to Port St. Lucie in 2004. Before retirement, he was a Project Manager and Director in the 125 member Information Technology division of a large medical association. Ney prides himself on his ability to analyze issues and find solutions which reflect consensus, compromise, collaboration, and cooperation. With a PhD from Northwestern University, Ney has had extensive training and experience in many aspects of technology. Ney has the type of planning, budgeting, accounting, and management skills which are needed for the work of the Board of Supervisors of the St Lucie West Services District. \"I know how the pieces fit together and how they work,\" he said. \"I understand planning, budgeting and accounting. More important, I understand how to get people to come to a consensus.\" 411 SW Fairway Landing 772-871-2859 gregg.ney@gmail.com
