Candidate: Robert MacCallum

I am Robert MacCallum and I am choosing to run for the school board for a few reasons. 

My background is in building businesses, training individuals to see their potential, and ultimately creating outside-of-the-box opportunities that will greatly help our school system succeed.

• My son started kindergarten and my daughter is in pre-K.  I have a vested interest in our school system to make it better.
• I want to focus on early literacy development.  Overall, our students are not able to read at their own grade level.  I would like to see enhanced partnerships with non-profits to help get our students to read at their designated grade level, especially before they enter 3rd grade. This will enhance their ability to learn and create generational change.
• Cell phones are a distraction and do not belong in the classroom.  My hope is to find a solution that can both keep our students and teachers safe while also making education and learning a top priority.
• Parental responsibilities- This topic is very important as a parent should always be in on the conversations involving their kids.  With rights comes responsibilities and we need to make sure our parents are exercising their rights and responsibilities.  Our teachers have enough on their plate and thus we should be sending our kids to school ready to learn and be positive players in the classroom.  Parents need to be engaged with their kids, making sure their mindset is right coming to school and that they are fully aware of what is going on in the classroom.  We accomplish this through full transparency and by creating volunteer opportunities for parents who want to get involved…. Example: the pickup and drop off lines.
• Students’ rights and responsibilities- this policy needs to be looked at and revised.  There needs to be a standard for all students and if you stray outside that standard then there must be consequences for those actions. Conversely, there needs to be incentives for students to excel and move toward being a positive influence and impact in the classroom and on campus.
• Teachers’ rights and responsibilities- there seems to be a disconnect between what the teachers can and cannot do and what their expectations and roles are.  I would like to bridge that gap and help teachers feel supported and empowered to provide the best educational experience for our students.

I want Indian River County to be a leader when it comes to Florida’s current education standards and I will work toward eliminating distractions in the classroom so that students can advance and learn.  

I want to see all core subjects improve in proficiencies and scores and offer a variety of ways to test students’ knowledge and growth outside of standard testing.  I am a product of the public school system, and I was not an A student; I was a C student.  My issue was not learning the material, I struggled with test-taking because of dyslexia and not being able to comprehend certain questions and what they were asking.

The goal is to have our students and teachers be in a safe and engaging environment to maximize their potential.

Our children are the future of this great community, and a strong educational system will prepare and empower our students to thrive in all areas of their lives, both in and outside of the classroom.
