Candidate's Statement

Elected in November of 2016, Gina K. Messenger is a mom and certified teacher. Gina is the Chairman of the School Board of Manatee County and previously served two years as the Vice-Chairman.

During her time on the School Board:

- the district has become financially sound with an increase in district reserves and an improved bond rating.

- school grades have improved and Manatee County is ranked higher in the state.

- three new schools have opened, one of which is a new hurricane shelter.

- Pre-Kindergarten classes offered are at a record level.

Gina believes in working together as a team and focusing on academic achievement to benefit all students.

Gina is a Manatee County native. She grew up in Northwest Bradenton and graduated from Manatee High School in 2005. Many members of Gina’s family served as public service role models. Gina’s grandmother, Carmela Busciglio, was a teacher in Manatee County. Her father, Joe Busciglio, served the community by working in the Manatee County Health Department for 38 years and her Mother, Karla, is a registered nurse that traveled the county to serve the community. An early experience volunteering at Jessie P. Miller as a high school student influenced Gina’s decision to become a teacher. Gina’s sister also became a teacher and is educating college students in Tampa.

Gina attended the University of Central Florida where she received many awards, including The President’s List. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 2009 and went on to teach in Marion and Orange Counties. Her experience teaching in rural and inner-city environments emphasizes her focus on the importance of Title I (high poverty) and early childhood education. While teaching in Orange County, Gina was rated a “highly effective” teacher.

Gina married her college sweetheart in 2012 in Orlando. Gina and her husband, Matt, bought a house in Parrish in January of 2015. In May of 2015, they welcomed a beautiful little girl, Olivia. In April of 2018, they welcomed a second, but equally as beautiful, little girl, Mia.
