Candidate's Statement

Anthony Darnell Cook, born on September 1, 1980, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a dedicated educator and community leader running for the school board. He grew up in Kissimmee, Florida, where he has made significant contributions to the education system and the lives of countless students.

From the 3rd grade onwards, Anthony attended Thacker Avenue Elementary School, Beaumont Middle School, Denn John Middle School, and eventually graduated from Osceola High School. He is a proud father of three children, Jayden (17), Layla (16), and Xavier (14), who are all part of the Osceola County District public school system. Jayden, the eldest, is graduating this year from Celebration High School, while Layla and Xavier attend the same high school.

Anthony Darnell Cook pursued higher education to equip himself with the necessary skills to make a difference in the lives of students. He obtained his Associate of Arts degree from Valencia's Seneff Honors College, his Bachelor of Arts degree in Counseling from Johnson University, and his Master's degree in Marriage and Family Couples Therapy with an endorsement in School Counseling from Stetson University.

Beginning his professional career, Anthony became the first male teacher hired when Bellalago Academy K8 opened its doors. He taught 5th grade for two years before transitioning to 3rd grade for three years. Recognized as the minority teacher of the year, Anthony consistently achieved exceptional student growth and test scores, establishing himself as a dedicated and effective educator. Additionally, he played a key role in transforming Bellalago Academy into a model MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) school and launched a mentoring program for boys.

Continuing his commitment to student success, Anthony Cook later transferred to Poinciana High School as a School Counselor. In this role, he spearheaded the establishment of a college and career-going culture within the school. Poinciana High School became a hub for launching district-wide college and career initiatives, including Decision Days and College Knowledge events, strategies to increase FAFSA completion rates, and supporting students in confirming their post-graduation plans. Osceola County saw remarkable improvement in post-secondary attainment, moving from 61st to 19th place among all districts, and FAFSA completion rates increased from 45% to 61% during the 2021-2022 school cycle. Anthony’s outstanding contributions were recognized when he was honored as the Counselor of the Year.

Realizing his vision of helping all students identify their passions, align them with suitable careers, and find pathways to pursue their chosen careers, Anthony Darnell Cook was promoted to the Coordinator of College & Career Services for the School District of Osceola County. In this role, he led Osceola County to become a statewide example of promoting college and career readiness. The district was the first to adopt the college and career platform Xello, which is now used statewide. Anthony played an integral role in hosting the state Virtual College and Career Life Readiness presentations and established a strong social media presence to highlight College and Career Life Readiness initiatives. Furthermore, he initiated the annual district-wide College and Career Week.

Anthony Cook’s exemplary work as the Coordinator of College & Career Services garnered numerous accolades and recognition. He was honored as a state innovator of the year and received the NCAN To and Through Grant. Additionally, he was accepted as an NCAN Fellow, attended the KIPP Institute, and received recognition from the Osceola County NAACP as an influential and impactful black leader. Anthony served on the advisory boards for the local college access network UpliftEd, the state college access network FCAN (Florida College Access Network), and the global advisory committee for Xello. He also contributed to the advisory boards of Osceola’s Early Learning Coalition and Junior Achievement. His commitment to leadership and community involvement led him to graduate from Leadership Osceola and gain acceptance to Leadership Florida.

With his extensive experience, dedication to students, and proven leadership, Anthony Darnell Cook is now seeking a role on the school board. His passion for education, advocacy for students, and commitment to ensuring every student’s success make him a compelling candidate for this important position.
