Candidate's Statement

Commissioner Tricia Duffy was appointed as a Charlotte County Commissioner in 2006 by former Governor Jeb Bush. In 2008, she was elected by the voters to a four year term. From 2008 to 2009 she served as Chairman of the Commission. Tricia and her husband, Barney, have resided in Charlotte County for 32 years. Most of her career has been in the private sector, with a successful tenure in health care administration and as an advertising executive for Comcast. She has a BA in Communications from Seton Hall University and a MA in Health Care Management from the University of St. Francis. In her first year in office she led the charge to make drastic reductions to the county budget and has continued that effort resulting in over $100 million in savings to the county\'s ad valorem budget. One of her priorities has been supporting economic development initiatives to enable the creation of new jobs in Charlotte County. At the present time she is working closely with prospective companies that are considering re-locating or expanding their business into Charlotte County, particularly in Murdock Village. Currently the prospective businesses include a large resort with a water park, a baseball training program, a music village, a downtown area and a European Outdoor Market. In addition, Duffy is largely responsible for the \"Open For Business,\" initiative which is designed to improve customer service, reduce bureaucracy and shorten permitting times for individual citizens, builders and developers. This program, which started in 2007, has been embraced by county employees. She is currently working with the Lt. Governor’s Office to eliminate or modify unnecessary or burdensome permitting regulations and looking for solutions to streamline the process. Additionally, Commissioner Duffy is exploring new, cost efficient ways of building roads to save money and ensure road projects remain under budget. Commissioner Duffy has worked closely with the county\'s growth management department and Team Port Charlotte to bring the revitalization of the Parkside District, located near both hospitals and in District 5, to reality. The Community Revitalization Area has been approved, community support has been obtained and plans have been made. The financial feasibility aspect of the plan is underway. It is because of her involvement in these major projects that she is seeking re-election and another term as a commissioner. “Five years ago, I was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to instill a culture of common sense conservative values to the Charlotte County Commission,” said Duffy. “Since that time, we have cut millions from the county budget, reduced the burden of government on local businesses and are working to create one of the most business-friendly climates in the state of Florida. I look forward to sharing my ideas to keep Charlotte County ‘Open For Business’ as I seek re-election in 2012.”
