On Thursday, May 24, Jessica Patterson filed her candidate papers to run for School Board for Manatee County in District 5.

Patterson is a Lakewood Ranch resident and proud mother to 3 children in the Manatee public school system. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and an MBA from Bentley University Graduate School of Business in Massachusetts. She loves to give her time and has volunteered with an animal shelter since 2005 managing social media and low cost spay/neuter programs.

Issues that are a priority for her:

·         Fiscal issues are important to her and gaining the trust of the tax payers.  She wants to make sure tax payers’ money is being spent in a responsible way that is also in the best of the children to have the best education possible. There is a huge push of expensive computer-based test prep with no proven results and at the same time squeezes all joy out of learning for children.

·         She wants to be an advocate for children in Manatee to help reduce/eliminate the high stakes testing that seem to have more power than the work they have proven over 180 days. We give more power to a single test than trusting in our teachers when it comes to retaining, remedial classes and graduating.

·         As a mother herself, school safety is a top priority. With an unfunded mandate from the state she wants to fight to protect children in schools here in Manatee. This should be a top priority from not only our school board but also from our county commissioners as well as the state.

·         With the departure of Dr. Greene, our focus on a new superintendent should be a slow methodical process so we can hire a superintendent that has the absolute best interest of our children.

If elected, she would be the only board member with school-aged children in the Manatee public schools. She can resonate with other parents on the stress and anxiety our children feel with the number of tests these children take and the unfairness of tying high stake tests to retention, remedial classes and graduation requirements while their grades that they worked hard all year for are not even part of the equation. We need to put trust in our teachers to do the job they were hired to do.

She is, first and foremost, a proponent of public education. She adores her children’s teachers and their schools. She wants to see a fair learning environment for all Manatee children who’s love of learning should be nourished in a healthy and positive environment.

She wants to listen to the concerns of Manatee residents, parents as well as all tax payers in the community to do what is right for the children in Manatee county in a financially responsible way.
