Candidate: Denny Thompson

Hello, my name is Denny Thompson and I am announcing my intent to run as your Republican candidate for Bradford County Clerk of Court.

I’ve been approached by friends, coworkers and members of the business community, all encouraging me to seek election to this position and I’m humbled by their faith in me.

I was raised in Lawtey by my Mother Geri Sapp and Grandmother Hazel Griffis. In 1985 I moved to Starke with my Mother and Step-Father John Bennie Sapp. I graduated from Bradford High School in 1988. My son Wyatt Thompson, graduated from Bradford High School in 2011, the University of North Florida in 2017 also resides in Starke.

I am a member of the Starke Rotary Club where I have served as president and received the Rotarian of the year award. I have also served on the board of the Bradford County Education as well as several other advisory boards and event committees.

I began my career at Clay County Public works in 1990. In 1994 I completed the Police Academy at Lake City Community College and later that year became a deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. I worked in both corrections and patrol and attained the rank of Sergeant.

I left for the private sector in 2005 for a consulting job with Universal Engineering. In January 2009 I was hired by Sheriff Gordon Smith, as Administrative Lieutenant at the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office.

In 2016, I was promoted to the rank of Major overseeing the combined Administration, Corrections and Finance Divisions of the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office.

As Chief Financial Officer for the last twelve years I have,

·       Prepared and implemented budgets ranging from 5 million to 6.5 million dollars.

·       Brought those budgets to a close without requesting additional commission funds.

·       Audited and accounted for over two million dollars in fixed assets.

If elected as your Clerk, I have the necessary experience to fulfill the duties of Clerk including but not limited to:

·       Clerk of the Circuit and County Courts

·       Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners, including serving as accountant, auditor and custodian of county funds

·       County Recorder
