With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience in Wakulla County, Sheriff Miller is committed to all aspects of a safe, healthy, and strong community in the place he calls home. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology from Florida State University and graduated as an Honor Graduate from the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement and Corrections Academy. He also attended the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Chief Executive Seminar Class 44 and the National Institute of Corrections in Longmont, CO. He served in the United States Army National Guard from 1989 to 2000.
Sheriff Miller’s professionalism has earned him tremendous respect in the law enforcement community. So much so that he was selected to serve on the Florida Sheriff's Association and then the Florida Sheriffs Employee Benefit Trust/Risk Management Board of Directors, representing Sheriffs state-wide. Sheriff Miller is a Past Commissioner on the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission (FCAC) and is a member of the Florida Model Jail Standards Committee (FMJS). He is the founder and managing Sheriff of the Northstar Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force and is a regular speaker/instructor for the Florida Sheriffs Association Commanders Academy. He has been inducted into the Tallahassee Community College Heroes in Public Safety Hall of Fame.
Sheriff Miller believes a safe community begins with strong community engagement and his dedication to the Wakulla community is deeper than law enforcement. He has supported numerous community and civic organizations for decades. He currently serves on the United Way of the Big Bend Board of Directors, the Big Bend Hospice Board of Directors, the Wakulla Rotary International Club, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the Wakulla 4-H Advisory Council. Sheriff Miller is very involved in the Special Olympics and the annual Torch Run. He has served on the Florida Wild Mammal Association Board of Directors, the Wakulla County School District Planning Advisory Committee, Goodwill of the Big Bend Board of Directors, the Wakulla Diamond Club, the Wakulla Gridiron, the Wakulla Public Safety Coordinating Council, the Wakulla Academic Boosters, and the Keiser University School of Criminal Justice Committee, among other organizations.
During his tenure as Sheriff, he has established programs like the L.E.A.D (Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence) program and the Civilian Police Academy. He has reestablished the Teen Driver Challenge – an instruction program created to help prevent Florida teens from becoming a statistic, and the Explorer program – where young adults can train and learn about the profession to determine if it is the right career track for them.
Sheriff Miller is committed to transparency and approachability. Under his leadership the percentage of crimes solved has improved from 27.5% to 83.9% - the 3rd highest clearance rate in Florida! Crime is also significantly lower under the leadership of Sheriff Miller. The rate at which crimes were committed in Wakulla County has been cut in half since he took office.
