Candidate's Statement

Hello to my Fellow Hamilton Countians,

I do hope all is well with you and your family. I have had the sincere pleasure of serving as your Superintendent of Schools for this last term.  I humbly ask for your vote again on November 5th for the opportunity to continue the work that has been achieved over these short 3.5 years.

First, I would like to introduce myself to the families who may not know me. My name is Lee Wetherington-Zamora. I was born and raised here in Hamilton County. My parents were Michael and Sharron Wetherington. I bring to this position an early engrained, life-long work ethic modeled by my parents and have 33 years of collaborating with personnel supervision and operational management, of those 20 years are in the educational setting. My qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Education Leadership- both degrees from Florida A&M University. I hold certifications in School Principal and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). It is challenging to sum up 57 years of life into a few short sentences! Bottom line is I have a proven record of proactive leadership and have demonstrated school improvement with a teambuilding approach and a solution-oriented work ethic. During my last campaign, I asked to earn your vote based on one of my proven leadership skills- GOAL ACHIEVEMENT!

While I find it a little difficult to compress my history into a few statements, it is not hard to talk about the goals we have been able to achieve over the last 3.5 years. Our students, our educators, and our administration teams have worked strategically in Student Achievement and School Accountability:

  • School Accountability- Hamilton County School District has maintained a “C” through the aftermath of the COVID impact- even with new criteria added for 2023-2024.
  • This school year Hamilton County High School has achieved the most accountability points in the history of school accountability.
  • This school year Hamilton County Elementary School has two historical achievements: the least amount of 3rd grade students scoring a Level 1 resulting in our 3rd grade students being recognized for being #1 in the state for largest percentage increase and the 5th grade students were 3rd in the state of Florida for their Writing scores. Kindergarten teachers and students were recognized for 74% of students achieving over the 40th percentile resulting in being in the top 10% of RAISE schools.
  • Hamilton County High School’s Graduation Rate is  82%, the highest percentage rate since the 2016 school year (outside of the COVID waivers of 2020 and 2021).
  • Hamilton County High School had 5 Seniors graduate with their Associate’s of Arts Degree from North Florida College in 2024.
  • Career and Technology Education Vocational Certification
    •  newly added Welding Certification program has yielded 73 certifications in just 2 years of implementation. Some of our students landed good paying jobs due to this certification, while some of our students are continuing their education at Riveroak Technical College
    •  Certified Nursing Assistant Certification program has been revamped with 10 certifications this school year compared to 0 certifications three years ago. Most of these students are already working in the Healthcare field.
    • Agricultural Sciences Certification programs continue to be vibrant and strong with numerous certifications. For the 24-25 school year, Hamilton County School District will officially be in partnership with Space Florida and receive the designation of a Space Florida Academy. Several of our Agricultural Sciences certifications are eligible for this program.
    • 55 students are scheduled to attend RiverOak Technical College for 2024-2025 compared to only 23 enrolled three years ago.
    • Hamilton County High School has revitalized its Air Force JROTC program with approximately 40 students enrolled for 2024-2025.
    • Hamilton County High School has reintroduced their Performing Arts program which has just exploded, highlighting our students’ artistic talents.

To continue this work, I respectfully ask you for your valuable vote. Our continued focus is to have our children to value their education, our families to expect it, and our community to support it! Our children, our educators, our administration teams have proven that Hamilton County School District is rising to excellence to ensure every student has a successful future!

Thank you for your vote!!
