Hi Voters,
I am Gwendolyn Manning Staten, a 3rd generation Wakulla native. I am a widower and was married to the love of my life, the late Kenneth Staten for 30 years. I am a proud mother of four and the super proud grandmother of five. All my children are graduates of higher education at Florida A&M University (FAMU), Florida State University (FSU) and Lively Technical School. The same importance of education is being passed down to our next generation.
My love of education and Christian values were instilled by my mother, the late Elouise Manning. I graduated from Wakulla High, attended FSU and FAMU where I graduated with a BS Degree and a Masters of Applied Social Sciences in Public Administration.
As a graduate, I was able to pursue career opportunities that afforded me great work experiences in Administration. I have served in the following managerial positions:
All these experiences required initiative, analytical skills, and the ability to multi-task as well as project planning.
Most importantly, I’m extremely passionate about education and inclusivity. I believe that our children are vital to the sustainability of our future, and they need to be exposed to a quality, culturally diverse and well-rounded education. This is the foundation for improving the quality of their lives as students, our community, and our country. Also, cultural representation is essential to understanding differing perspective on the effects of our curriculum and the need to embrace racial diversity for a better Wakulla.
My WHY…
It is because I believe that I can provide a unique and valuable perspective to this school board. I believe in the power of and the opportunities that education offers, and it is our responsibility to ensure that all our students have greater understanding of its importance so that they will be equipped to be future leaders.
PRIORITIES / CONCERNS
So, because Wakulla is known for its “Grade A” rating, I would love to be a part of the continuing legacy of this Board and school system. And, finally I believe that, as with any great thing, there is always room for improvement and inclusion.
Lastly, I would be honored to become the first African American to be elected to our School Board. Let's make history together!
