Candidate's Statement

Being a lifetime resident of Lee County, I am very aware of the need for comprehensive mosquito control. The most important mandate is to protect public health from diseases transmitted by mosquitoes (West Nile Virus, Eastern, Western and St. Louis Encephalitis, dengue, malaria, etc). Though control is essential, it must be conducted in an “environmentally friendly” manner to minimize chemical pesticide usage through state-of-the-art management techniques and equipment, and utilizing safe non-chemical pesticides and biological alternatives. I believe I am uniquely qualified and experienced to ask for your support for my re-election to The Lee County Mosquito Control Board. Bio: My family moved to Fort Myers when I was 2 years old. After graduation from Ft. Myers Senior High in 1971, I attended Florida State University. In 1976, I graduated with a BS in Biology (major studies: microbiology, chemistry and parasitology). I was immediately employed by Lee County Mosquito Control (LCMC) as a research technician in biological control (without the use of chemical pesticides) of mosquitoes. In 1977 I became the Supervisor of Lee County Hyacinth Control, which is also directed by the LCMC Board, to control non-native and invasive plants in Lee County waters. In 1978 I was accepted to the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. It was there that I met “Dr. Beth”, my wife of 32 years and business partner in our two veterinary hospitals in Lehigh Acres (1986 – 2006). Contained within the professional oath of veterinary medicine is the responsibility to safeguard public health. Viewing service as a privilege, I served on the Lee County Humane Society Board for 12 years, I am a past president of The Rotary Club of Lehigh Acres and in my 25th year of membership, a servant member of McGregor Baptist Church and have faithfully served on the LCMC Commission since 2000. In summary, I feel my educational, work related experience and business acumen, and commitment to service and community equip me for the position on the Lee County Mosquito Control Board. I sincerely appreciate your consideration and support, Larry Lawrence Murphy, Lee County Mosquito Control, Area 1
