Candidate's Statement

Vision • Expand Lee Memorial Healthcare System’s (LMHS) county-wide primary care clinics to include a clinic in the Lehigh and Alva communities. • Engage community leaders and key influencer to focus on clinic based medical management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, sickle cell, HIV/AIDS/STD’s thru funding of community-based organizations. • Work with community-based organizations in all communities to promote, educate and train residents on Telehealth (electronic record, patient remote monitoring, web-based e-health, telemedicine, billing and scheduling) to improve their access to healthcare. • Advance the representation of Women, African-Americans, Hispanics and Veterans in middle and senior leadership positions at LMHS to reflect Southwest Florida’s diversity. • Continue to seek creative solutions to keep the Trauma Center open. Background/Experience • Owner of JEG Consultants (a grant writing business). Wrote, monitored and implemented over $21 million dollars in federal, state, local and private grants for clients throughout the country. • Educational background: Bachelor’s of Arts in Geography and Associates of Arts in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University; Graduate Studies in (Urban Geography) from University of Akron, Ohio; and Certificate of Studies in Town & Regional Planning from University of Utrecht, Holland. • Member of Lee Memorial Health System Board of Directors, 2000 – Present, gubernatorial (Governor Jeb Bush) appointment in 2000, elected in 2004 and 2008. • Board of Directors for the Naples/Southwest Florida Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. • Co-Chair of Lee Memorial Health System; Self-Pay and Under-insured Task Force. • Former Manager Southwest Florida Enterprise Center, formerly (City of Fort Myers Business Development Center). • Primary architect and administrator for the nationally recognized Velasco Village and Hope Gardens Housing Programs. • Commissioner, Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council, gubernatorial appointment. • Replacement Instructor, the School District of Lee County, Florida (2002-2007). • Board of Directors, Source of Light and Hope Development Center (HIV/AIDS/STD Prevention programs; Hope and Chariot Youth Residential Homes). Accomplishments • Originated and nurtured Lee Memorial Health System’s Vendors Participation Program to encourage purchasing and contracting for Local, Minorities, Women, Veterans and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises. • Influenced the revamping of LMHS’s Board of Directors meeting schedule to reflect consistency with other healthcare systems (saved staff time and resources) while making board meetings more accessible to the general public (2012). • Promoted development of Dunbar Community United Way House which received an (Honorable Mention Case Award in the category of improving population health) National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (2012). • Advocated for the development of LMHS Office of Diversity. LMHS was awarded the Hodges University Diversity Award for diversity in hiring practices and commitment to provide opportunities to vendors and small businesses (2011). • Worked in conjunction with the Lee County Black Historical Society to hold first Black Hospital History Forum which chronicles the history of Black Hospitals in America and history of Lee County’s Black Hospital – Jones Walker (2011). • Initiated and developed funding for the “MAN UP” HIV/AIDS/STD prevention programs in Southwest Florida (tested over 1,600 individuals to determine their health status) (2009). • Board Liaison to LMHS Human Resources department which is the largest employee in Lee County, Florida (10,500 employees). LMHS has received national designation of Employer of Choice (Herman Group) and AARP’s 50 Best Employers for Workers Over 50 (Ranked 2nd in the nation) – (2009 – 2006) • Recipient “Inspired Image Award” African-American Student Association – Edison College (2008). • Member National African-American Commission on Healthcare; Texas Senator Kaye Bailey Hutchison, Chairperson. • Committee member (Public Policy; Membership), National Association of Health Services Executives. • Promoted Health and Wellness Pilot Programs at Lee Memorial Health Systems. • Secured financial sponsor for Sickle Cell Diseases Association of Lee County annual awards luncheon (2002-2012).
